Snow day

I don't see any plows out. I think they've given up.

There are 180,000 students (some of whom are siblings and/or share an address). Some of them are walkers but many ride buses. FCPS has the 7th largest bus fleet in the nation and 2nd highest ridership numbers.

FCPS continues to be bad at math. 180,000 students divided by 45,000 bus stops gives you 4 kids per bus stop.

In what world does that make sense.

Our roads are a mess. We don’t have sidewalks. There is no way kids walking to the bus and school buses can safely navigate the roads.

How is Loudoun able to open but not Fairfax?

Arlington is open too. And MCPS. Ugh.

With the snow forecast coming on Saturday. when do we think we are finally back in school?

When we had bigger snows than this, we all went out in our neighborhoods and shoveled the sidewalks and the bus shops. The schools asked for help at the school too. That’s what we need to do now. Everyone can their local area done.

Glad we could entertain you, now you can get back to the hole you crawled out of.

It's gorgeous and sunny here in my hole....

Can I climb into your hole?

I wonder who decided priority of plowing ... my kids' elementary school parking lot is icy and relatively un-plowed whereas the parking lot of Rec center across the street is completely clean and fully functional (not saying Rec centers shouldn't be opened .. they definitely should be, but why wasn't the school done at the same time... it's literally across the street)

We also shoveled the area of our street this year on the first day.

And then there’s supposed to be more snow this weekend, with temperatures next week not significantly higher than this week. I don’t see things changing substantially for a lot longer than 24 hours. Safety concerns are certainly valid, but my question is when do you draw a line and say we can’t just keep schools closed indefinitely?

There's no point in returning to this thread tomorrow. Of course, it's going to be closed. There's no plan to get them re-opened.

I'm in the McLean area and shocked at how many roads haven't seen a plow. The major ones like Westmoreland and Great Falls are clear but many side streets including those used as cut through streets haven't been touched. At this point I'm not sure what good a plow can do. The stuff is so packed down and icy and I doubt it is going to clear unless the temps go up.

I'm lucky enough to work from home so I've been taking extended lunch breaks to go sledding with my youngest. He's rapidly approaching the age where he won't want to be seen with me in public or hang out anymore so I'm enjoying it while it lasts.

But with the current conditions (which I agree are bad on some side streets), and the weather not changing to mid-40s+ and/or rain to melt the ice … there is no way to open in the foreseeable future and that is the problem.

That’s my question…at this point are we just waiting for a thaw? Because that is how it’s feeling and that could be a full week away.

I assume different plow companies have their own designated areas and priorities.

In my old neighborhood, our plow contractor was responsible for hospitals so we were literally the last street plowed. My neighbors were livid.

Our current street was plowed first.

I’m sure the rec centers have their own contracts.

History tells us . . . about a year.

100%. People need to pitch in to clear sidewalks and bus stops. No government entity is responsible for those.

And complain to Youngkin for the awful job VDOT has done on many neighborhood roads. They should be checking the work of contractors and getting them to fix it. Usually it warms up and melts a couple of days later but that’s not happening this time. VDOT has to go back out there.
