Snow day

Glad we could entertain you, now you can get back to the hole you crawled out of.

Sorry pal....my street is still not plowed and I know we aren't the only ones.

Your street isn't going to get plowed at this point. We're beyond that.

Why can't they come through with some salt or sand? My theory is they somehow don't have any more readily available. Nothing else makes sense.

As a doctor do you understand how much salt and sand they would have to put down to clear 6 inches of snow. You have to do it first. Go get some salt and see how much you have to use.

However I do think a 2 hour delay would have be fine. As long as they can see where they are stepping.

Does you being a doctor make you an authority on snow removal? I don't think anyone is complaining about 6 inches of "snow". The problem is packed "ice". When temperatures are persistently below freezing, the treatment for "ice" is salt (de-icer) or sand.

I’d rather deal with that headache than the fear of putting a child on a bus on these roads

I admit the closure is frustrating but the snow is still pretty to look at. Go enjoy the pretty snow and stop being so cranky.

I would normally agree that this is stupid but I was genuinely shocked at how bad some roads were today driving to and from work. Some neighborhoods have been left unplowed and the roads are an icy mess.

There’s your answer

It was like this under Democratic Governors as well. We don’t have the equipment or resources to handle snow. That said, this is a different level of ridiculousness. I know the County is huge but I wold guess that most of the schools were ready to be opened today and that the percentage of schools with bad roads is really, really small.

And yes, I think that the small percentage of kids who are in cross county programs can lose a day in favor of the vast majority of kids being able to return to school even when there are a small percentage of schools that need to be closed for safety purposes.

There was a fatal accident years ago in FCPS when a kid fell in the snow while walking to the bus stop and got run over by a car. It’s unimaginable to any parents. I applaud the decision to keep school closed tomorrow.

For those complaining, I'm in a neighborhood in the middle of Fairfax county and many of our roads haven't seen a plow, even some primary roads! The snow is so packed down and froze solid overnight. Blame VDOT. It's never been this bad. It's frustrating but FCPS made the right call.

Also at some temp, the salt treatment doesn’t work. Can’t recall what temp
Though.

Yes, make policies around freak accidents. Always smart

Have to think we'll be closed on Friday too. I don't see anything substantially changing in regards to sidewalks and bus stops in the next 24 hours.

safety for all.

and for those who don't care for safety, i guess that is why you didn't use protection to avoid having children.

Yeah not at all. If they're just waiting for it to melt.... next week is cold too

But with the current conditions (which I agree are bad on some side streets), and the weather not changing to mid-40s+ and/or rain to melt the ice … there is no way to open in the foreseeable future and that is the problem.
