What happened to this California family?

Heat stroke does happen often and people become disoriented and irrational when it sets in, but this seems more sudden and unusual than that.

Baby was in a carrier, but on the ground next to dad, not on his back. Baby was a year old, so probably capable of getting out of the backpack and didn't.

They also had plenty of water left.

Whatever it was it must have been extremely fast acting. Everyone is in close proximity and the dog hasn’t run away to find water or chewed at his leash if leashed? No signs of sickness? Dad is found sitting as though he is just taking a break? It’s strange.

I really think we're going to find out that they were poisoned--either one parent did it as a murder-suicide or both parents were in on it together. But however it happened it's really sad.

Pp. I think it can happen but is extremely rare? It’s just that nothing else fits with how they were found

Carbon monoxide is the theory. The theory is that the gas came from the ground, a nearby mine or fault. Gas can travel along the ground in a toxic cloud before dispersing into the atmosphere.

They should look into whether there were any tremors or minor fault movements that day that might have triggered a gas release.

The mother was found up the hillside, right? She might have been trying to get out of the gas cloud, realizing that it was close to the ground.

Basically, its the opposite of a house fire, where they tell you to crawl on the floor so you have access to oxygen.

This may also be related to climate change - gasses are escaping from the permafrost due to ground warming. This may be a big issue moving forward - the sudden release of ground gases could rapidly suffocate people.

As a mom I will be trying to grab my baby in a dangerous situation, not away from it. Even I get killed because of it.

Yep. And there would be some empty vial or similar from the poison found in the search of the area or their home. Which there was not.
