A woman was walking down the street in her neighborhood. Two pitbulls dug under the fence around their yard, escaped onto the street, and attacked the woman. They bit her arm, hand, thigh, and chest, and pulled her for several feet. Another neighborhood heard her yelling, ran to help, and was also attacked and bit by these dogs. The owner of the dogs is allowed to keep them as long he fulfills "a variety of requirements, including vaccinating the dogs for rabies, spaying or neutering them, muzzling them off the property, having them microchipped and have them attend a socialization training."

You cannot socialize vicious dogs, you can merely manage their behavior. The owner already failed once managing their behavior, the fence around his yard was not secure enough to keep them contained. There is no way to make these dogs friendly. There is no neighborhood without children, elderly people, or other pets, where they can safely live and avoid everything that "triggers" this type of aggression. Dogs like this should be humanely euthanized, in order to protect every person and friendly animal that lives in their neighborhood.

The dogs should already have been vaccinated for rabies. Muzzling them off property does nothing to protect anyone walking down the sidewalk when they escape their fence. Microchipping them helps to identify them, but does nothing to prevent further attacks. These conditions are a joke.

They attacked her and they’re not being put down? WTF?!

7 year old child was walking down the street with his brothers. The boys were chasing their pet chihuahua, which had gotten loose. The neighbor's pitbulls dug under the fence, and attacked the children. Two boys were able to get away, but the dogs attacked the third boy and mauled him to death. Those dogs mauled him so much, that poor baby was left lying naked in the street as he died. Apparently all of the neighbors knew the dogs were dangerous, since the dogs often got loose and harassed people. Even if these dogs lived in an "adult only" household, it did not protect that sweet, innocent child.

I’m curious; where are all the “sweet pitty” dog moms and dads who say there’s nothing wrong with the breed? Even the mildest dog can and will bite, but I haven’t heard of golden retrievers tunneling under fences and attacking passersby, let alone multiple incidents of the same. I have never heard of chihuahuas mauling adults to death. I’ve never heard of a cocker spaniel that refused to relinquish a bite.

This whole thread is so upsetting and scary.

It’s the number of pit bulls that burst out of doors, jump over or dig under fences. With one in the neighborhood, we’re just not safe.

They really should be banned but the pro pittie (shudder) lobby in this country is out of control

I’m just wondering how to protect myself and my kid. I like to take walks, just like so many of the people who were mauled to death….

Short of a ban, not much. When they want to get out, they do. When they want to attack, they do.

There’s a pit bull ban in PG County, but that doesn’t stop people from having them.

Fines for possessing them would help.

Sure, but who is monitoring this? Our rescue dog is almost certainly part pit, but the paperwork from the rescue says otherwise, and the dog is registered with the county as the mix the rescue told us she was. No one is coming around to check.

A little 6 year old boy was riding his bike, in his neighborhood. He rode past a yard, saw a pitbull, and assumed it was on a chain. The dog was not chained up, according to the owner it must have broke the cable it was tied to. It left its yard, chased the boy down, pulled him off his bike, and mauled his lower body and thighs. It took several people to get the dog off of the child. The little boy required surgery. Maybe the dog lives in an "adult only" home, but that did not protect this child

A mother and father left their 1 year old baby with their roommate, and asked her to babysit the child while they were at work. They asked her to keep the pitbull away from the baby. The babysitter did not keep the pitbull away,. and the dog bit the child's face so severely you could see the baby's teeth through her cheek. The baby will need surgery, but thankfully is home and will heal. The pitbull in question attacked at least one other person in the past. The authorities have the dog, and are deciding whether or not to label it a vicious animal. If it is labeled legally vicious, the owner can keep it as long as they keep control of it at all times. This dog has already attacked two people, and that poor baby has a scar on her face for life. (Not to mention the emotional toll). There is no reason this dangerous pitbull should still be alive right now.

What happens to the owners of these dogs? There was an infamous case in San Francisco where a woman was mauled to death right outside her apartment door by her neighbors’ aggressive dogs. The dog owners went to jail for a while.
