9. Barnard (IB) - MATCHED

Feeling really conflicted. We were admitted to nursery at an independent school WOTP and received a significant financial aid package. Could swing it, but would rather invest in the community.

Huh? If you wanted to invest in the community your 1st choice would have been your IB school. But it wasn't, was it? You have choice. Stop with the faux liberal guilt and just enroll in the private while you wait for the charters.

Seriously. Barnard is doing fine and will be fine without you. Being like that is not helping anyone.

is there a date in october where the schools need to invite the waitlisted families?
or is every school different/ rolling invitations ?
Anonymous
Rolling. There is a date in early October when enrollment count data is calculated to use for next year's budget process, and some schools refuse to fill empty seats after that (squandering a public asset in my view), but some schools continue to make offers. It's their choice.

What say you?

Here is what I say- do you speak Spanish? Do you speak French? Do you think it’s a good idea to dump your poor kindergartener in a classroom which will likely have some aspect of the virtual learning in a school where half the time they’ll be completely lost? Kids start learning to read at those schools in kindergarten. Your kid won’t know anything and will fall squarely to the bottom. Their confidence will take a huge hit, to say nothing of their math skills which are also partially taught in the target language.

Here is my takeaway- stay at your current school or look at your inbound. If you and your child DO speak Spanish and French (which I doubt), then i hope you get in everywhere.

A whole lot of assuming thrown in there. Who gave you a wedgie this morning?

PP is always like that. All their post are about how you shouldn't apply to immersion school if you don't speak the language. Just ignore them.

And it's pk3!! If you're feeling conflicted about it for ECE, you weren't going to be sticking around, anyway.

Yup. Let the spot go to someone who actually wants it and might actually stick with it. If you're iffy on a PK3 that is as good as Barnard's, you'll never stay.

Lots of PPs say the same as I do. We are definitely not one person. I guess I am just tired of listening to people like PP who would rather set their kid up to fail just so they can brag to their friends about how their little sweetie just loves Spanish!

Please explain to me how you are setting your kid up for success?

How is it good parenting to Dump your kid in an immersion school where they won’t understand their classmates and teachers and they’ll be well behind in reading, math, science, and of course, feel like losers because they can’t communicate with anyone else?

Is bragging to your friends about your allegedly bilingual child worth it?

It can be done, easier with parent support. Says this immigrant who came over at 10 years old, and lots and lots of other immigrant kids.

+1. My child is non-native bilingual (not at a HRCS) and when I try to talk to kids multiple grades ahead it’s clear they have very limited language skills. Doesn’t seem worth it to me.
