Interesting article noting how Seuss would have detested Ted Cruz and everything he stands for. The article quotes the author of a book highlighting 100 of the greatest social justice warriors...including Seuss. Let’s not erase his entire legacy. Stop printing those handful of problematic books, but don’t associate his name with hateful racism. |
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!! Are you out of your mind? Seriously, people believe this? |
No worries. People with more than one brain cell aren't doing that. |
Don’t stop printing ANY books. |
Why waste paper on books that have minimal or no sales? |
Yes!! Force ALL book publishers to continue printing old, obsolete, and poorly-selling books! This is the kind of small-government free-market conservative policy I can get behind!!!! |
Um... publishers stop printing books ALL THE TIME. |
+1000 |
Is that what they said? No sales? |
Not true. His name was already removed from Read Across America Day. It used to essentially be Dr. Seuss Day. Teachers and librarians would wear the big red and white hat from the Cat in the Hat, and books by Dr. Seuss were prominently featured. The damage is done. ^^^That’s the cancel culture aspect of this. For whatever reason, this thread has focused on the publisher’s discretion rather than discuss the impact on the annual event and the response by schools. |
You don’t work in publishing do you. |
So the damage is that we're forcing people to celebrate a variety of books, rather than just one author? Alrighty then. |
What is the damage that was done, exactly? Who was hurt by this? |
x1000 I have always thought that the obsession with Dr. Seuss was overblown. That's the wonderful thing about books is that there are so much variety!!!!!! |
I mean...he was super racist. Have you seen his editorial cartoons? Have you seen how he depicted the Japanese? He also wrote some really great children's books. Both of those things can be true at the same time. But if we're doing Read Across America Day, and we decide it should be focused on one author only (which I think is silly anyway), then there are a lot of great children's book authors out there who weren't racist. Stopping veneration isn't the same as cancelation. I'm pretty sure thousands of high school seniors will still get copies of "Oh, The Places You'll Go" when they graduate. |
