I want to be Mormon

This is one of the reasons many denominations do not believe Mormons are a Christian denomination. Also you will not readily find the Bible in the pews at church. Mormons mostly study and read from the Book Of Mormon, not the Bible. I attended at 2 different wards with friends to "check them out" and I had to ask for a Bible. That was pointless as it was not used at either service whatsoever.

I remain Methodist.

I see nothing wrong with their ways.

We study the scriptures on a rotating basis in Sunday School. Two of the four year cycle are Old Testament and New Testament (King James version), then one year on the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ and then the last year is the Doctrine & Covenants. You will find all of these books quoted during Sacrament Meeting, but none of the physical books are found in our chapel. You’ll have to bring your own or use one in a classroom. Your friend should have explained our scriptures a little more.

Mormon here. I am a single, childless woman in my late 30’s and very politically liberal so I definitely don’t fit a lot of the stereotypes. If I ever decided to leave the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, I would join the Episcopal Church. Maybe look there, OP?

Their founders were truly lovely 🙄

Joseph had a best friend who was a Black man or what was the story on that? I’ve always heard his friend was exempt from the rest of the rules on Black people.

It was Brigham Young who was the racist. Joseph Smith's views on race were similar to other white northerners back then. He was opposed to slavery for the most part.

The Black friend could be sealed to him as a slave in order to go to the Celestial Kingdom (heaven).

If Mormons are indeed a Christian church why not leave/provide the Bible in the chapel at all times? You only study the Bible occasionally -- 2 our t of 4 years? I think you have proved the point it is not really a Christian faith.

I have no problem with Mormonism being a "non-Christian" religion but really-- like most things -- Mormonism needs to be more forthcoming. Like, "we no longer practice polygamy." The missionaries always "forget" to add "on Earth". Polygamy is alive and kicking in the afterlife. Share your husband with his other wives!

What’s wrong with being semi Christian?

I am more in favor of polyandry. i may have to be faithful to my DH here on Earth but I want many husbands in Heaven. Isn't that why it's called Heaven?

If you want to be Mormon, you must first resolve this question: Why would Joseph Smith, who spoke 1800's American English, translate the book of Mormon into 1600's King James English? That version of English had not been spoken for almost 200 years.

Could it be that Joseph Smith did this to give his book of Mormon the appearance of authenticity as the KJV Bible?

As another PP suggested, just appropriate the ideals you like about the religion. Service is a wonderful concept that so many churches encourage but few parishioners partake of. In Mormonism it is required -- you can't get to heaven without doing constant good deeds.

i like that family home evening thing that someone mentioned. We may try that. I will pick the least busy night of the week and dedicate it to the family being together. I think we may try for 2x per month.

We certainly don't need to convert to some religion that checks our W-2s in order to do these things I find attractive.

(We do give 1% of our income to our charities of choice each year. My kids also donate 1% of their allowance to the charities of their choice. We didn't demand, we just set the example.)

For effect. He made stuff up, just like the Apostle Paul did.

Of course it is all made up. That is why Mormons have lost so many members the past 20 years. It's called the Internet.
