I want to be Mormon

The Mormon church controls everything a Mormon is supposed to do/not supposed to do. Even the underwear you wear.

No R-rated movies. No searching the internet for Mormon problem issues. No writings that may criticize Mormonism. (All these things are called "anti-Mormon" by the church. Yes, the church even tells you what vocabulary to use.)

If you dare to question anything it is because you are not praying hard enough and the problem is with you, not the church.

Ask me how I l know.

That happens with Hasidic Jews too.

I have been very impressed with Ken Jennings, the all time Jeopardy champion and author. I listen to his Omnibus podcast and follow his Twitter account. He seems very devoted to his Mormon religion but also very liberal, compassionate and super funny.

^^

Does he at least support women for bishops or the Quorum of 12?

Elizabeth's Smart's father just came out as gay last year. He has left the church saying it is not supportive. Luckily his family seems supportive.

i like that family home evening thing that someone mentioned. We may try that. I will pick the least busy night of the week and dedicate it to the family being together. I think we may try for 2x per month.

We certainly don't need to convert to some religion that checks our W-2s in order to do these things I find attractive.

(We do give 1% of our income [b]to our charities of choice each year. My kids also donate 1% of their allowance to the charities of their choice. We didn't demand, we just set the example.)
Mormons have to give 10% of gross. Yes they know exactly how much you make.

Wondering if anyone read your link in your post. Then I wondered, again, why people deal with religion at all. What makes people engage in this fantasy? Fear of death?Community? Religion makes zero sense.

Mormonism is all about the after-life. It is an obsession. They put fear into each member that they will not be reunited with their family in the afterlife if they are not Mormon. They literally threaten that you will be separated from your children if you or your children leave the church. You -- well, your husband -- will not become god-like and have his own planet where you and his other wives are endlessly pregnant creating spirit babies.

You know full well that ANY religion could be shredded like that, right? Islam, Hinduism, Christianity (especially Catholicism), Judaism. All religions have really wacky ways. In the end, these are the values that matter to Mormons, if this doesn't appeal to you, you have the freedom to walk into any other house of worship, or none.

Here is one of the "I'm an exmormon" videos who talks emotionally about the fear she experienced as a child in the Mormon church and the fear of being separated from her children in the afterlife.

This is an excellent series.

Bigotry and putting fear into children are values??

Mormonism is from the 1820s, not the middle ages or prior to the C.E. He was one smart shyster. He knew how to make a buck!

It is no wonder the LDS church is leaking members like a sieve. Thank goodness for the Internet.

Another video where a Mormon Sunday school teacher was told that Mormon leaders decided to indoctrinate kids as early as 18 months old because too many people were leaving the Church. (And this was about 20-25 years ago, when the Internet became widespread.)

--another ex-Mormon who basically lost her family when I could no longer agree with "I know the church is true")

Sounds nuts.

“Years ago a friend of mine was going down an escalator at a department store. Her blouse got caught in something and tore severely. It was beyond saving and she decided to buy a new blouse. She selected a couple of items and the saleslady was helping her in the dressing room. When she removed the torn blouse, the sales lady did a little recoil and said, "oh, your camesole is supposed to go over your bra".
She admitted that she felt quite the fool.”

You do know that at this time, MOST American churches would not be supportive?

Did most American churches ask their members to raid their retirement accounts and kids' college funds to support Prop 8 in California? And brag about it in public ? Cause the Mormon Church did.
