Another racial incident at Churchill HS

Anonymous
At last week's PTA meeting, an Einstein HS mother spoke up regarding the racIst image of the Churchill athletic program. A boys soccer team jeered Hispanic students on the Einstein team and told them that they should get ready to be deported. Another team had a white male athlete make fun of Asian athletes while coaches stood by laughing.

I would hope that at Spring tryouts as the Bullying and Harrasment guidelines are reviewed, all athletes and coaches are reminded that this type of misconduct will not be tolerated. Any future acts should be cause for removal from the school athletic team.

This comment is a little hard to fully believe. First, although there have definitely been racial incidents at Churchill, I have never seen the kids openly disparage other students because of their race. Secondly, Churchill has a very large Asian population and many participate in various sports. My DS, who is white, has plenty of Asian friends at school. He doesn't pick friends on the basis of their skin color.

Are you saying you can hear everything that the kids say to each other on the soccer field.

How can you not believe this. My child is white and was on a silver spring club team and when playing Bethesda, Potomac as well as VA and Howard County club teams they would call them mexicans and tell them to go back home all the time. This was pre-Trump.

What were the racial incidents, if not kids opening disparaging other students because of race? It isn't any LESS racist to draw a swastika anonymously than to call someone a "Mexican" in a disparaging fashion.

As parents and students acknowledged at the PTA meeting, you never forget the first time you hear the n word and students have heard it through middle school and at Churchill. I am sure the same goes for any student who is disparaged or made fun of because of their race. Perhaps because you and DS haven't had these experiences because you are white.

Here's the flawed thinking of why reports of racism have gone unaddressed for years in the cluster: it doesn't happen to all black/asian/hispanic students so this isn't a problem in our community. The threshold of when these problems should be stamped out and students discipline is 1. 1 racist incident at Churchill is 1 too many. 1 incident is enough to send shockwaves of hateful reminders through members of the community. 1 incident of hate is enough to create an unwelcoming environment for students.

White and Jewish and certainly not immune to racism and anti-antisemitism (multiple swastikas drawn throughout the school etc.). Sadly, this issue needs to be addressed throughout the county and the country. Nephews have endured the same behavior at RM, but since it's not considered "elite" they don't get the same kind of attention. Let's work to fix this everywhere and not keep putting one school in a bubble.

+1 This is true of a host of problems at Churchill that have gone unaddressed including sexual harassment of female students.

An extremely entitled student body plus twenty years of shit like this swept under the rug by Dr. Benz, much to the delight of the entitled parents.

It will take YEARS for Mrs. Heckert to clean up the shitshow Benz left behind. MCPS is complicit, because they allowed her to stay on loooooooong after she should have been shown the door.

Because of the increased amount of scrutiny on affluent white kids. High school kids making fun of each other to included poking at stereotypes has always happened. How many times a day do you think the N word is throw around at Kennedy or Blair. It isn’t white kids so it isn’t as big a deal and those kids get eye rolls or talkings to about respect. When white kids do it the police are called and admin make a production least they be viewed as complicit or downplaying it. That said it is the world we live in and white kids need to know they are on a shorter leash with certain subjects.

Kind of like how we now have an opioid crisis because so many middle class white people are dying from it, but when lots of poor blacks were dying from crack cocaine or even opioids, there didn't seem to be much of a crisis; or like when HIV was a gay man's disease and so it wasn't considered a crisis, but once it started to hit straight white people, then it became a crisis.

So, yes, sh1t like this has been going on at other schools, but now that it's hit the wealthier white enclave, all of a sudden there's more attention paid to it.

I think part of it is also that society doesn't expect much from poor people, but they expect better behavior from more "educated" wealthy people.
