Can you reconcile remaining Catholic?

Naturally, moderator Jeff Steele would never allow a similar topic that trolled Muslims or Jews.

Catholics are encouraged to pray to saints, asking them to “intercede” for them with god.

For instance, if your name is Catherine, you might like to pray to st Catherine and ask her to pass on your requests to god. He might pay more attention if one of his saints asks him than he would if asked by a mere mortal.

I am honestly LMAO! You really think God needs a support staff through which prayers travel?! I could not be happier that I’m Protestant now and no longer Catholic - this reasoning is absurd!

I personally don't think so, but this is Catholic Church teaching.

I am a 55 year old life long Catholic who went to Catholic school all the way through law school and not once was I taught that God needs a “support staff” to pray through or to pray to any saint as a way to get God’s attention. Rather, I was always taught that reaching out to saints in prayer was similar to asking friends to pray for you or help support you in a time of need.

Agree! I guess I’m still Catholic since I haven’t flipped to another religious alternative. We were taught never to worship false idols or pray to them for salvation, yet saints/priests were ok to act on our behalf. Twelve years of Catholic school and I just prayed to God (aka something greater than us). Never have an image of God. Never did a rosary or the stations. Only a few times said the prayer to Saint Anthony when something was lost (it worked once or twice). Honestly, it’s between me and the greater good. It’s all semantics, symbolism and interpretation. The only thing that’s solid is good vs evil. Clearly these criminals represent evil and certainly are false idols. I never idolized them because I never believed they were closer to God than me. Thankful I didn’t experience the atrocities of the victims and so heartbroken for their suffering.

It’s pretty clear in the Bible that we don’t need a middle man. It’s criminal that the Catholic Church has taught so many that they do. They did so for the same reason their sermons were in a language people didn’t even understand - for power and to keep people dumb. The catholic church is NOT about Christ. It’s about men.

NOW we're getting some true anti-catholicism. bigot obsessed poster, where are you when the actual tenents of your faith are attacked?

I’m one of the posters who’s been calling bigots, bigots. I’m not Catholic, fwiw, and I never have been. So I don’t feel obliged to let you bully me into defending any tenets. But yep, the hate from posters like you and pp is palpable and clearly bigoted.

Wherever you and pp get your moral values—atheism, evangelicalism—these values are failing badly.

I used to say, report this stuff. I’ve reported a lot over the past few days, and to Jeff’s credit he’s taken it down.

But I’m at the point where I’m ready to let the bigots expose their hideous faces with all this this ugliness. Let them show their hate and intolerance to the world, let it all hang out like exploded sewage tank. Reasonable non-Catholics need to see what bigotry looks like, just like the rest of the US needs to see unbiased reporting on Charlottesville (yet those in the Fox bubble don’t). If it makes DCUM look like a cesspool of bigotry, that’s not my problem.

I’m not Catholic. You may feel differently.

Hey idiot troll, it’s “tenets.”

I recently had a "facebook" run in with a Catholic man who believes the media is picking on the Catholic Church unfairly. It appears as if he hasn't read the papers. The media has reported extensively on the Nassar and Michigan State cover up, the Chicago Public schools sex crimes and cover up, the east coast boarding school sex abuse crimes and cover up and much more. He simply doesn't like it when the media tells the truth about his beloved church. Instead of placing his anger where it rightly belongs, the priests who committed and continue to commit such crimes and the leadership who covered it up and continue to cover it up, he blames the media. It reminds me of my parents who committed and covered up abuse in the family, and my extended family who continue to this day to say it wasn't so bad.

I can understand how someone can remain Catholic. You simply don't look at the overarching leadership and just look at your own parish. And you hope to god that it isn't happening there. Seems a off to me, but that's how its done.

We're looking at Catholic schools and most are not priests and nuns and regular teachers. It concerns me but MCPS is having a lot of issues and cover-up so its where ever you go. Our MCPS will not allow parent volunteers and is really closed so that concerns me far more than a Catholic that allows parens and is more open and welcoming.

I taught in a Catholic school. Our regular Lay-Principal directed me to cover up physical abuse of a student by his parent. She wanted me to let the priest deal with it instead. I went home, said no f*ck*ing way, and called the department of family services. When child services showed up the next day at school, the principal walked by me and said under her breath several times, "We don't cover up things here". She was a whack job. Please don't believe that just because their are lay leaders and regular teacher in parochial schools that cover ups still don't happen. Secrecy and concern for church reputation trumps victims in the Catholic system every time.

Not nearly to the same extent as the systematic and secretive handling of this issue in the RCC.

No one really knows the extent of sex assault. Let's just be honest here.

lol. so actual attacks on Catholic theology = nbd. this just proves your actual agenda is to silence critics of the Church's corrupt approach to sex and abuse. You don't actually know or care about what makes Catholicism Catholic. just defending a corrupt institution.

No, it’s between Catholics and bigots who appear to be atheist and evangelical. If those non-Catholics can chime in, so can others.

No, there are plenty of Catholics and ex-Catholics with extremely negative views of the church right now.
