Look, I found a dead horse!
Let's go beat it! Again! Again! Again! |
| I think we can agree to disagree. In my area of Vienna, many have been attending SB meetings for 2 decades complaining about this very issue. So,I guess it depends where in Vienna you live as to whether or not parents wanted TMS. Had my kids been Gen Ed, none were, I would have placed out of LJMS. I’m happy with the move-some of our voices were finally heard - even from MW. |
There have been very few School Board meetings where the boundaries for Jackson were publicly discussed. I can understand the complaints about Jackson being over-enrolled. But throwing the GenEd students at LJ under the bus, as part of a solution that was not really aired at either a School Board meeting or a work session, means that only some voices got heard. And the comments on this thread make it clear that the parents who stand to benefit economically from this change don't want those other voices heard, either. |
| Prior to Patty Reed , we discussed moving our community out of LJ. With Patty Reed, we discussed moving our community out of LJ. Finally-it was done! Our voices were heard. I’m not sure where you were some years ago, but I’ve been here and complaining all along. Did not attend any work sessions, too political. But I voiced my concerns for many years. |
Whispering in the ear of a former SB member is not the same as a transparent process. We get that you wanted to move to a wealthier school. Accommodating that request will disadvantage other children, further concentrate poverty within the FCHS pyramid, and ultimately weaken the county’s tax base. |
So what? If you don't like your school district, fix it, change it or move. OES and MWES parents chose option 2. and Most of us don't have the time to fight the county on BS like this. We just buy a house we can afford in the best school district possible. If the county pulls a fast one and tries to re-zone us to a diff. school that we don't like, we fight. We don't care about other people's school districts. It's their fight. Just because FCHS goes down the tube it will not affect county taxes. Show me the math. If it does, all the county has to do is raise the tax rate by a fraction to compensate. I'd much rather pay that than put my kids in a sub -par school in the name of social justice. Buh Bye! |
This thread raises awareness of the injustice and the self-interest that motivates you. At some point we’ll get rid of the phony liberals like Palchik and Keys-Gamarra and replace them with more progressive members. For now, enjoy the overcrowded mess that Thoreau will become. |
injustice and self-interest - self-interest, yes. The whole country operates on self-interest. It's a capitalistic democracy. Injustice, no. I can't take care of everyone else's child. Their parents should. That doesn't make me unjust, just indifferent. Enjoy the overcrowded... - Will do. After 2 years, I wouldn't care a rat's a**.. My indifference kicks in at that point. |

| How can you not understand that the school board is supposed to operate for the best of the entire county and not just their own self interest |
|
Let's change the perspective of this thread from arguing about what has already happened to discussing what is going to happen.
Does anyone have any credible numbers on Thoreau and/or Jackson's enrollment for next fall? |
Thoreau will have around 100-120 new kids approx. they are several hundreds UNDER capacity so it will be fine. Some also have said a lot from the aap sections in 6th grade are picking LJ next year, so it could certainly be on the lower end of that estimate. |
OK.... so I mentioned "credible" numbers. Thanks for trying to answer the question, but I was interested in what people have actually heard from administrators at those two schools as recently as possible. I already had week-old data from an admin. at TMS that they have "over 200" coming next year. But, that is already a week old and "over 200" could be many things. So, I was looking for something more up to date and more accurate.... from either school (b/c LJ could lose kids to TMS but still have a lot of kids coming in....or there could be more kids staying at LJ for AAP, etc.). I'd be interested in total numbers as well as incoming AAP numbers. |
| At the thoreau open house the admin said 100-120. |
| Why do you need it more up to date than week old info? |
