Not a bro Dad

This is fun! I grew up in the SF Bay Area. We didn't have "Bro Dads," exactly, but there was a "type."

Wore lots of black, with Birkenstocks on their feet. Man buns before they became a douchebag accessory. Atheist or non-observant Jewish, but dabbled in Zen Buddhism. Drove Volvos before Volvos were common. Didn't smoke weed around the kids, but didn't hide it either. Kept up on the latest restaurants, especially ethnic or natural/organic/vegetarian places.

Is this supposed to be a criticism? A dad spending time with his young son outdoors teaching his son a challenging sport is something to be commented on in a negative light? I grew up in San Diego and I’m very familiar with the bro dad. Hell, a couple close friends from high school are clear bro dads. Say what you will about their style and he may not know what brooks brothers is, but one big plus about the uber active bro dad is that he spends a lot of time with his kids and the kids get to come along for the ride on all the activities.

This thread still delivers.

I'm heading back home to SoCal (OC) next week to see my mom. She moved to a neighborhood a few blocks from the beach - it's going to be Bro Dad central. Tons of young families in her neighborhood.

- Golfs. Like, actually likes it, not just for networking
- Fit, but not "too" fit ("dad bod")
- Polo shirts and ballcaps on the weekend
- Drinks beer
- May or may not smoke weed, but never around the kids
- Listens to Dave Mathews Bland- sorry, I mean "Band"
- Played guitar in college to get chicks, may play in a hobby band with his bro dad pals
- College educated
- Cell phone clipped to his belt (which is often one of those woven leather jobs)
- General air of benign douchebaggery

Did I miss anything?

Actually, for some inexplicable reason, they tend to wear visors more than actual hats.
Really into their son’s lax games and talks about lax all.the.time even if they didn’t play it.
Wife is SAHM
If not formerly involved in GOP politics then grew up in the area and does something in real estate, likely b/c either their family owns the company or their buddy from Prep/Landon/Gonzaga’s family owns the company.

I love to see my DH being dad bro to our grown sons. I get a little jealous that I am left out of the bromance.

Living in California now after 20 yrs in DC. Was in Morro Bay over the weekend at the Skateboard Museum- lots of this type.... but....

"CA Bro Dad" is not an insult. The T-Rex-armed older dads in DC with their lack of manly skillsets and outdoorsiness (realizing I am totally generalizing as are others) would love to have the bonded, present relationships these guys have with their kids. DH is a literal bro- bro-dad. He's black and he's a bro. It's awesome to have a present father. Better than other options.

I'm 18:07 and this is exactly the voice DH does when he taught all the little ones skiing, surfing and swimming. Totally Crush.

-With regard to Polo shirts, typically Under Armour in a tacky colour.
-With regard to fitness, typically hits the curls way too hard - obnoxious biceps. Probably getting testosterone supplements from doctor.
-Wears Oakley sunglasses.
-Drives a Tahoe or Yukon.
-On family beach trips he wears board shorts.

Your DH sounds like a lot of fun and a great dad!

Can’t soeak for others, but the visor keeps me cooler and shows the world that I’m not wearing a hat because of balding issues. A bro dad is not balding.

This list seems more like a list of characteristics of a man who was on his high school football team (but rarely played) in a midwestern state, circa 1984, and never got past those days.
