Trump - “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?”

I would like to point out that the Diversity Visa Lottery is currently the ONLY “normal” way for a Norwegian (Swede, German, French,...) to immigrate here - other than an over million dollar investment or a rare specialty visa category.

So, whoever wants to attract more Northern Europeans, is forgetting that they are shutting down all their pathways....

Look at what he’s been able to accomplish.

Having lived overseas in asia, I'm convinced that racist positions are the default state of man and that nearly everyone in the world is highly racist outside of western nations.

The rest of the world just doesn't care.

THIS. The rest of the world is laughing at America for being so timid against charges of racism. Asian countries are some of the most racist places on earth.

+1
As are African countries.

Just recognizing the reality of the world. Keep in mind that if you are importing people who are ok with racism, you can expect those attitudes to be more acceptable in our own culture.

Huh, how did you get the idea that most immigrants are ok with racism? You are the one who seems to be a proponent of racism so your issue needs to be with yourself, not immigrants.

Um, by speaking with them?

I speak fluent chinese and japanese.

I consume asian media.

I will not repeat their distain for people that aren't like themselves. They even hate other asian groups.

LOL. America’s problem of racism is because we have a tiny population of Chinese and Japanese here. Who passed the Chinese Exclusion Act again? Who put Japanese into interment camps?

Chinese make up the second largest group of people foreign born in the USA, followed by Indians.

Legal immigration from Asia outpaces anywhere else in recent years.

I'm not blaming either group, I am noting that many people of non European origin hold views we would find racist regarding other groups. For example according to the Anti-Defamation League and the washingtonpost, 30% of Latinos hold anti-semetic views compared to 5% of Whites and Asians. Anti-black views are also entrenched in Latin countries as a legacy of the racial caste system.

And your point is that we should emulate them?

Damn fine point. And very true.

I've lived in foreign countries and agree that enlightenment about races has a long way to go in most places.

And that is why I always look to the US to be a beacon. We are not like other countries. Yes, we have a difficult history that we have yet to really come to terms with. But we've made progress. And we have (at least nominal) principles that separate us from other countries. Trump is trying his best to jettison those principles, but many of us are going to fight our hardest to make sure he isn't successful.

Not the PP, but what an asinine comment. Of course the story is all over the newspapers. The point is, have they named the sources, or is everyone satisfied with the usual "anonymous" sources? Perhaps we need to gently shake your shoulders?

And Vicente Fox chimes in with a burn:

.@realDonaldTrump, your mouth is the foulest shithole in the world. With what authority do you proclaim who’s welcome in America and who’s not. America’s greatness is built on diversity, or have you forgotten your immigrant background, Donald?

The sources were Republican congressmen. That’s the best part!

Here’s a little clue. When the Fake News reports something fake, the White House jumps all over it. Tonight, crickets from the place Trump calls a “dump.” They can’t deny because there so many witnesses confirmed by multiple news outlets.

It’s heartbreaking because I have face the fact that he’s what we deserve, because our stupid, arrogant, selfish, paranoid nation elected him (and yeah, I get he didn’t win the the general election. That gives me little comfort). I’m so sad for my kids because I do believe that a generation from now America as we know it (under our current constitution) will be no more.

Yes I’m sure your children will be much better off in a majority minority country. much, much better off. No doubt in my mind

Why wouldn't they be?

Great question. Can you think of any reason at all? Any reason at all that we shouldn’t lament the passing of the country from the European Americans who led it for 200 to 250 years and achieved greatness with it ON THE BACKS OF SLAVES? Or is that RACIST and NOT OKAY and OFF LIMITS?

FTFY

Thank you. I was about to do that myself.

FFS. And that PP probably thinks of himself as being superior to the immigrants he wants to keep out.

Most white trash does.

+1. Also, they can't deal when someone identifies certain parts of the U.S. as "shithole states".

Yet again, it's perfectly acceptable for white liberals to refer to certain states and regions of the U.S. as "shitholes." But if anyone refers to certain countries as shitholes, well... RACISTS!! So entertaining to see hypocrisy at work.

According to Trump, anyone from the country of Africa, for starters.

You remember what happened in Yugoslavia right?

You either get inter-ethnic conflict, or you need authoritarian measures to keep the peace. Either is a pretty dismal scenario.

Those are not the only two possibilities. Switzerland is an example of a country with multiple ethnolinguistic groups that doesn't fit either scenario. The US is attracting the best and the brightest from most of the so-called shitholes. Indeed, until recently, one of Trump's top aids was of Haitian origin. I'm sure she is thrilled to know what Trump thinks about her heritage.

The swiss have been able to keep their federation together for 1000 years. Part of this is national service that unites people in a common experience, part of it is their system of government via direct democracy. Likewise it is the same system of the canton system that allows for wide latitude in interpreting their federal laws, basically giving a lot of autonomy.

Here in the USA we have very little that unites us other than consumerism.

Let me tell you something. It's damn difficult to immigrate into Switzerland. It's one of THE most diffcult countries to immigrate to.

Yep. It's very difficult to immigrate to many countries, but the U.S. apparently should welcome everyone.
