The wildest thing about MAGA to me is not how it disregards the Constitution but how it seems to have not ever heard of it?

Why? We’re not idiots, that’s why. For starters, you don’t stand around your car on a street as dark as Swann at 3 am on a Saturday night. That is insane behavior. Yea, yea, yea — I’m blaming the victim. Whatever. That victim is blaming half of you for government waste, fraud and abuse — and he isn’t discriminating either. He thinks you’re stupid. I think he’s stupid. He thinks you had it coming — I think he had it coming.

Wow. You don't have young adult children, so you? And you're obviously not a young adult yourself.

As much as I warn them, this is 100% something my late teen/ early 20s kids would do. They would think nothing of it. Because, if you can remember that far back, at that stage in life you believe you're invincible.

Agree he/ they are stupid. But to say they "had it coming" shows what a horrible and out of touch person you have become, PP.

Your kids are naive, sheltered idiots. They need some street smarts. You did them no favors by giving them a cloistered existence, shuttling them from activity to activity.

3am in any major city in America? Keep it moving and stay off the street as much as possible. This is true in DC, NYC, LA, Chicago, Boston, etc. Get in your Uber and get home. There's too many guns on the streets of this country to be hanging out on a dark side street adjacent to a nightlife area.

They are almost always worse behavior-wise than the civilians. No, I do not want armed Big Government thugs roaming the streets of the District, harassing civilians.

Why? Because that's what they do.

And some of us would like to live in a society where you can get in your car without being assaulted and carjacked.

But you do you.

The "they had it coming" people are pathological and morally sick. But it does explain why so many folks in DC just don't give a damn. And it's because of the cynicism and coldness of so many DC residents that a federal takeover is increasingly likely. The crime that progressives take as normal is not normal for the vast majority of human beings.

AKA exactly why DC needs to be federalized. The city is simply incapable of fixing itself.

This is the capital city of of supposedly the most powerful nation on earth. People shouldn’t have to live like the VC, the Taliban or some drone strike could be around every corner.

Everyone on this thread who says the city needs to be “federalized” needs to tell us whether they in fact live here yourselves. Because we know you don’t.

Stick to your lane.

I have lived in the District (Adams Morgan/ Cleveland Park) for a total of 23 years. I 100% support federalization. Our local government officials are simply not bright enough to manage the problems.

+2. I’m a 30 year resident. We’ve demonstrated a complete inability to police ourselves. I’m tired of it.

Dc was way worse in 1995…you are now just old and afraid of your own shadow.

+1 even worse in the 80s

DC had over 500 homicides in 1991. In 2024, we had 187. DC homicides are lower at this point than in 2024, a reduction of -12%.

People are nuts and have a political ax to grind when they say "crime in DC is out of control!"

If they were white you'd call them infants.

Please find me one case in DC where white teens attempted a carjacking.

You can’t report things that don’t happen.

Idiotic take.

First, the tweet’s emphasis on unarmed is silly given the fact that we can name multiple notable murders by unarmed DC teens in the past few years — Bryan Smith was beaten to death in Shaw, Mohammad Anwar was run over by his own vehicle in Navy Yard, and Reggie Brown was beaten to death in Brightwood. All three murders were perpetrated by unarmed teens, rendering the unarmed aspect of this case that the tweeter emphasizes completely moot to anyone with an ounce of IQ.

Secondly, the tweet’s emphasis on the quick police response is irrelevant given DC’s leniency in sentencing. What good does police response do if the teens are immediately released to their parents and reoffend shortly thereafter, or in the case of the above literal murders are held until they are 21 and then released back into society?

The crux of the issue is that DC leadership has shown itself to be incapable of proper justice. Teens who commit serious crimes such as murder or assault with serious bodily harm need to be removed from society — not held for a negligible amount of time and released. This provides the best deterrence — if these teens know that they will spend a couple of decades behind bars, they won’t commit crime at the same rate. If the DC government won’t do this due to their progressive stance, we need the duly elected federal administration to step in and get it done.

Certain neighborhoods were “way” worse. But the way crime has been allowed to metastasize to all corners of the city represents a complete failure of government.

Again, just complete nonsense. As an example, few people commenting on this thread would ever have gone to the neighborhood where this attack occurred in 1995…not to mention nobody would have ventured to the Union Market, H Street or countless other neighborhoods that most now don’t think twice about venturing.

It’s all revisionist bullshit from people who are now old and afraid…which is what happens with most old people.

💯

I know lots of long time DC residents who are unhappy with crime but very few of them want to invite the Trump administration to “take over”.

+1. These people are either old, white, rich and don’t leave their 4 million dollar homes in Barnaby Woods, or they don’t live here. We barely have a voice in politics to begin with and now you want less?!

There are no $4M houses in Barnaby Woods. Try blaming Foxhall.

You feel like democratically elected officials aren’t working (for you), so your response is to take away democracy?

No, Home Rule versus presidentially appointed commissioners are both two valid alternative forms of democracy. The former, which did not exist from our nation’s founding until 1973, puts more emphasis on the local, whereas the latter puts more emphasis on the national. Both are democratic forms of rule for a federal city that the entire nation has a stake in keeping nice and safe as our capital city.

Remember, the former did not exist until 1973.
