We won’t know until trial.

The very large empty bag makes me wonder about something like a drug drop, family was in the wrong place at wrong time perhaps. He had bought a house, as a single young teacher seems a bit out of reach financially. Maybe he had alternative income?

People don’t hike an hour into the wilderness to pick up a bag of drugs wtf. You people are so sheltered and imaginative!

You are so ignorant about that area and way state parks are used.

Since bag was empty, more likely to have been a drop.

Why schizophrenia? What information provided (vs notions in your head) seems to point to that?

No doubt they can tell from his eyes.

The scientific method at work.

You can tell a lot from a person's eyes. Don't dismiss the importance of eyes and facial expressions.

Mugshots are known to be completely neutral and objective. Remember, cops are completely incompetent except when it comes to mugshots.

Think what you want. The descriptions of him by students' parents and the woman who was cutting his hair fit his mugshot pics. He is mentally ill.

Still photos are the diagnostic standard for schizophrenia. Or some kind of mental illness. This is known!

Walk through some sites where the unhoused with mental illness camp out or volunteer in a facility that feeds and shelters the homeless. Photos not needed.

The girls encountered another hiker, who led them off the trail to park staff and then the hiker went to look for the parents and found the dead bodies, then left the area to call police.

There was no cell service in the park, so nobody was calling the police quickly.

And no, it does not seem like the murderer killed others before. He was sloppy, and made no attempt to hide or destroy evidence. He went driving around town to get a haircut and was apprehended there. Didn't put up a fight and then admitted to the crime. Does not sound like some seasoned killer. Law enforcement also said no indication the girls were his target. I have no idea what happened there that day.

The mom should have stayed with the kids. What if the hiker they encountered was also a psycho?

Um, the chances of that are...pretty low? She took them out of the scene and told them to run and go find help, then turned back. My theory is that something altercation happened between the father and the creep and father told mother to get the kids out of there. But at that moment, it was not yet a deadly encounter, so the mother's thinking was to go back and help or maybe deescalate. She might not have known at that moment that they were dealing with a psycho killer.

You are apparently a city slicker unfamiliar with the fact that much of the backcountry, including much of the land adjacent to and comprising our national forests, has no reliable cell service.

I would not call myself a “city slicker” (whatever THAT is supposed to mean). But I admit, we don’t do this whole hiking/camping thing.

So are you implying there just may not have been anyone at all around the area? That seems off.

You could learn to be a little more polite and less insulting, PP.

He's a drug addict. Don't insult the mentally ill.

It's Springdale, Arkansas not Chevy Chase. Young and not rich people buy homes in places like this all the time. If you make 40k and a house costs 80k it's not all that out of reach.

Many people are both.

Anonymous wrote:My hunch is that the killer was running on a trail when he ran into one or both of the girls. He did or said something inappropriate. Mom and dad overheard or saw and mom took the kids to the car. Killer tried to claim it was all a misunderstanding. There's no cell phone service , but dad tries to take a pic saying he'll see what the police have to say about it.

Killer panics. If dad reports it, he's not getting that teaching job. He stabs him in a panic to avoid being photographed and reported to police.

Wasn’t dressed for running and had several bags with him.

Very much the longer type and described by former students' parents as distant, cold, and not very communicative.

Not the previous PP but ..To my point earlier - he’s killed before.

That's a skewed sample. Everyone I see in prison looks like a criminal because they all wear orange jumpsuits.

Not true. There's often a "look" (in addition to their manner of speaking, laughing, facial expressions, body language, and responses to other people's comments and/or movements) about those with severe mental illness that is not unfamiliar to those who work with them. This guy is very strange, and a variety of people have described him as such, including people from the 3 schools in 3 years where he's taught.

What a weird accusation. Also, this is DCUm, not backcountry rural moms.

The Duggar compound is in Springdale. Walmart HQ too I think.

Off topic, but I would be a big time lurker on the Backcountry Rural Mom's site!

I wouldn’t say he hasn’t killed before solely based on him leaving the bodies to be found. Of course he was sloppy in this case- he knew two living witnesses still existed (the girls). He was probably thinking of how easily he would be identified this time.

… and he went to get a haircut b/c then he could no longer be identified???
