APS School Board Race

When she became president of the AEA. It’s a full-time job.

Sounds like their preferred candidate didn’t win. I’m a lifelong democrat (didn’t grow up here and though) and the ArlDems involvement in this process is so gross to me. I don’t want to support them at all.

Only 1% of eligible voters - lolololol. The caucus is a joke.

I voted early for Moe. It's her election to lose.

Anonymous wrote:I’m not saying don’t listen to APE as constituents. But as the head of a union signing an official letter under both AEA’s and APE’s letterhead is more than just listening. It’s making a statement. June is obviously with APE. They have been divisive since the pandemic, and are close to the Youngkin administration in how they take leadership from him. (Remember that the whole cellphone brouhaha started with Youngkin’s EO.) And sorry, I’m not going to vote for June because of that. You go vote for whoever you’d like tho.

Instead of making assumptions, why don’t you just ask June directly about it? If you know anything about her, you know she’ll tell you her thoughts directly.

I do question the person who keeps coming to this page to spread false narrative about June being a Youngkin supporter. Do you know anything about her? Either you’re making a wild assumption or you’re blatantly spreading false information.

No one is saying that June directly supports Youngkin. People are pointing out the June as head of AEA willingly wrote a joint letter with APE, a group that supports Youngkin and that won't disclose who funds it. That's not what I want to see in a future school board member. We can judge our candidates based on their past actions and associations. She either agrees with APE or should have done more homework before teaming up with them. Either way, no thanks.

Does this argument work both ways? Am I to understand that because APE signed a letter with AEA they have now endorsed the entire AEA position? Does APE now support unlimited collective bargaining rights for teachers? Do they support AEA's position on salaries and pay increases in the coming years? AEA opposed in-person learning during COVID, so clearly we must assume that APE has repudiated those views. What other positions does AEA have that APE has now seemingly signed on to by agreeing with them on a single issue?

Good point, but Moe's crew on here just seems to want to bash June... which makes me question why they think she can't stand on her own as a candidate?

I'm not part of Moe's crew. I never heard of Moe before this election. I am going to vote for Moe though. June co-writing a letter with APE was definitely a factor I considered.

For all you people with this position… do you feel the same way about members of Congress if they ever work on a single bipartisan initiative? This viewpoint seems ridiculous to me. We want to continue nothing but polarization & complete separation of the sides forever?

Yes I would view it negatively if any potential elected official teamed up with a shady lobbying group with right wing ties that won't disclose who funds it. The fact that you think this is okay speaks volumes about your own views.

You’re losing perspective. This was a letter about getting cell phones out of classrooms. Something that the majority of parents in Arlington want. You’re making a mountain out of a molehill.

How do you figure a majority of parents wanted cell phones out of classrooms? Parents I know were either against a ban or don't really care.

I’m a parent of a current HS student. I support the ban, and don’t know many parents who don’t also support it. Also, all the teachers support it.

APE sucks, Youngkin can get bent, but a stopped clock is right twice a day.

You said about June - "She’s a uniquely qualified candidate as an APS parent, APS teacher, and head of AEA who works so closely with teachers."

Sorry you don't like being called out on a lie. Why did you do that? You don't think June can stand on her own credentials so you made one up?

You’re responding to the wrong poster. So I called her a teacher, that that’s what she is to me. She worked in my child’s school in the classroom with students all day long. Move on. There’s nothing nefarious going on. I’m not sure why you keep trying to make drama where there is none.

DP. I don't care if she was a teacher or instructional assistant. I do care when she was last employed officially at APS as staff. Has it been three years (since she assumed AEA's presidency)? Or ten years? That's important. I also care that she endorsed herself which is still sketchy.

She took leave from APS when elected to AEA. When her 4 year term with AEA is over, she can go back to APS in an educator role.

So she hasn't been in a classroom since 2022?

That’s 2 school years. The primary issues in APS have remained the same

Not to mention she's working directly with teachers, schools and the school board in her position with AEA. She's probably one of most tuned in outside of the school board. These people trying to find any fault to discredit a candidate, its really odd. Both of these woman are citizens, neighbors and friends of many of us - trying to add benefit to our community. The nastiness is not necessary.

People don't care, it's time to stop and just have people collect signatures to get on the ballot

It's true. Most don't GAF about school board.

Really it’s time to stop having separate school boards. The governance is too diffuse. I wish Arlington had a mayor who also oversaw the schools.

What would stop the mayor from appointing their own sycophants? We need an nonpartisan elected school board. What we don't need is a primary season. Better candidates will present if they had to collect signatures and didn't have to pledge to the Democratic Party.

There would not be a school board - the mayor would appoint a superintendent and if the schools were bad there would be a single point of accountability instead of the school board blaming the county council for decisions beyond their control and the county council doing the same. if the mayor did a bad job, presumably it would be harder to get reelected. This is how NYC does it - it is not ideal with their current dumpster fire of a mayor, but in general I think it works pretty well.

Nah. NYC is a total shitshow. What would stop the mayor from appointing a sycophantic super? I’d rather that the schools not be planed in one person’s hands. By getting rid of primaries, more qualified people would run for the school board, and I’m good with that.

As a constituent, I want to vote for my representation.

I want a school board, I don’t want a crooked gatekeeping process.

Agree nastiness is unappealing so I assume you’re not voting for the one candidate who went on a nasty attack against her opponents’ supporters, which was June. Oh wait you’re defending her!

Does that break the pledge you made when you voted in the primary?
