Better candidates will present if they had to collect signatures and didn't have to pledge to the Democratic Party.[/quote] There would not be a school board - the mayor would appoint a superintendent and if the schools were bad there would be a single point of accountability instead of the school board blaming the county council for decisions beyond their control and the county council doing the same. if the mayor did a bad job, presumably it would be harder to get reelected. This is how NYC does it - it is not ideal with their current dumpster fire of a mayor, but in general I think it works pretty well. [/quote]
