Why do people back into parking spaces?

If you have to back out when there's a mad rush to leave you're screwed. Only amateurs pull into spots in the parking lots during a sporting event.

Backing in doesn't take long if you know how to actually drive. The problem is so many stupid suburban drivers don't know how to drive. On top of that they have asininely sized vehicles like SUVs.

Or…

Park however you like, and after the event pull out a phone/book and wait for the crazy mob to thin out rather than trying to jockey with a crowd of bad drivers who are tired, in a hurry, and possibly drunk, just to get out a little sooner.

It’s not even up for debate. It’s settled science.

Don’t be a back-in-is-safer denier. It makes you look as foolish as climate change deniers.

I knew backing in is safer, and that’s why I do it.

But I had no idea it was so irritating to so many DCUM’rs…that’s an added bonus for me. Safer, AND irritating to lots of insufferable people who post here.

I’ll never park any other way now.

People like you are sad and small.

And, yes, I do back in in many cases. But you are just a jerk.

The fact is that backing into a parking space so that you can pull forward when leaving is actually safer and can help reduce your risks of injuries to yourself and others. The American Automobile Association (AAA) recommends all drivers back into parking spaces whenever possible.

The key words there seem to be “whenever possible.” I submit that it’s extremely rude to do so when others are waiting to get by.

How is it any more rude than to have people waiting while you back out? Either way, you’ll be backing at some point. Either arriving or departing. So someone will be waiting on you either way. What’s the difference?

I’ve realized in the last couple years I’m not enough of a jerk. But Ive got aspirations.

Once you have passed me with your car whether I am walking, driving or waiting to come out of may parking spot, I assume it’s safe for me to continue walking, driving or reversing out of my spot. I am not expecting you to start backing up all of a sudden. It creates confusion and is dangerous. I see it all the time. If you park “head in” and are reversing out of your spot, people know exactly what you are doing and how to react.

As long as you are skillful and can do it quickly and correctly on the first try, I have no issue with it. If you suck at it, or you are one who "pulls through" but not far enough so that the space behind you is unusable, then you suck.

Yes people who back into parking spaces commando style are idiots. They inevitably cause jam ups in parking lots. Just park normal for everyone' sake.

I agree...

...except for those morons who back in at Costco.

Bc a lot of people have backup cameras.

I’ve always thought it was a man thing. I knew a guy who was an electrician and had to back in to driveways to be able to access tools etc in back of truck, he only knew how to back in to park, so I could see why. Everyone else? Men being silly? I’ve never seen a woman do this.

Yup, this. I’m have good spatial awareness and it doesn’t add much time for me to back in. Regardless, I don’t mind wait a few minutes for someone to back in if it reduces injuries.

It doesn’t take a few minutes to back in.

It’s like an extra 5 seconds to park and saves time when you’re pulling out.

People who can’t wait 5 seconds for me to park can kiss my a$$.

Ah, yes you're the a$$hole one. Everyone can wait on you because you're more important than everyone else.

+1

Everyone here claims it only takes them 5 seconds. They have horrible time perception, because the majority of people I see clog traffic, take 3 tries, and it takes way longer than 5 sec.

BTW the safer way is to pull all the way through and never back out. It's actually less safe to clog traffic and reverse without signals.

Hat off to backer inners.
I am too nervous about hitting a car on either side backing in. Not used to precision backing. No garage btw.
I back out into open space watching out for speed demons.
