Why do people back into parking spaces?

Anonymous
Cars back in-era are like back to front wipers.

Fire and police are required to back in.

Back up cameras were mandated on new vehicles during the Obama administration because statistics showed pedestrians were getting hurt when people were backing out of spaces. As opposed to mandating parking be built better and forced backing in the administration required new car manufacturers to install cameras.

Complete and utter lies and BS.

Drivers who back into spaces do so because they’re too dumb to back up out of a space. So they back in instead. They do it because they’re sh*tty drivers it has nothing to do with safety. Think about it.

I have to say as a person with a small car often parked next to a huge car it is more difficult to back out.

I like it when I can pull forward into a spot and get the benefit of pulling out without having to back in.

As I've gotten older, I've lost some range in head movement. I now park far away from everyone because backing out is so problematic for me. In a busy parking lot, my backup camera and warning system can only help so much. I hate waiting for someone to back in to a space, but there is no denying it is safer to pull out than back out. I drive around and look for a spot I can pull in to.

Why is Costco any different? It's so busy I don't want to be backing out of a spot there.

I'm a native Virginian and I back in.

I don't get the hate.

The fact is that backing into a parking space so that you can pull forward when leaving is actually safer and can help reduce your risks of injuries to yourself and others. The American Automobile Association (AAA) recommends all drivers back into parking spaces whenever possible.

Yup, this. I’m have good spatial awareness and it doesn’t add much time for me to back in. Regardless, I don’t mind wait a few minutes for someone to back in if it reduces injuries.

It doesn’t take a few minutes to back in.

It’s like an extra 5 seconds to park and saves time when you’re pulling out.

People who can’t wait 5 seconds for me to park can kiss my a$$.

I’ll be parked and in the store before you turn your car off. You can take all the time you want.

You need easy access to your trunk to load up all your Costco purchases. If you back in, your trunk hatch door will be difficult to load if it's really close up to another car, or backed up to grass.

It's so annoying.

I find it annoying to have to wait for people to back out. They can see and can't judge distance. A simple maneuver turns into an 8 point turning effort.

There is nothing more annoying than having to wait while someone backs out of a space at .1 mph and makes a 7-point turn to finally get pointed the way they want to leave.

People who pull into spaces are generally terrible drivers - which is why the avoid backing into spaces. Spaces are much smaller than the travel lanes, so it’s easier for their sub-par driving skills to back out into the much-bigger travel lane than for them to have backed into the smaller space to begin with.

I always laugh when I see the idiots backing into a parking space at Costco. They get their groceries and realize they can't access the hatch or trunk because they're jammed up against a wall or the car in front of them. Stupid.

Actually there is one thing more annoying, waiting for the backerinner to back in. I actually don’t care if you back in or not but people who back in are usually slower than those backing out.

I’d be more inclined to pull into spaces if there weren’t people like you in the world, blasting down the parking lot rows at 30 mph blaring your horn at someone 50 yards away as they start to back out. How DARE they back out of a space and require you to slow down and wait on them! The nerve of these MF’rs!

So I back into spaces so I can better see lunatics like you coming from a greater distance as I’m pulling out of the space. Then I can keep an eye on your crazy ass and make sure you don’t ram me at 30mph because you were looking at your phone while speeding through the parking lot.

I know your type very well.

It’s a fascinating combination of impatience and jealousy.

Impatience, because they’re always late due to poor planning skills, and jealousy, of people able to maneuver a vehicle better than they’re able to.
