Why do people back into parking spaces?

Anonymous
Over the last few years, I’ve seen more and more people backing into parking spaces. Back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, as they try to line up their giant vehicles making everyone else wait forever.

Why don’t people just pull into a space??

I’m with you. Average person takes almost three tries to back into a space. If it’s that hard, pull in forward.

Honestly because of this:

The fact is that backing into a parking space so that you can pull forward when leaving is actually safer and can help reduce your risks of injuries to yourself and others. The American Automobile Association (AAA) recommends all drivers back into parking spaces whenever possible.

DH thinks it's time spent upfront to prevent possible accident when leaving. Engineer friend does it by habit because required for safety protocol at work.

I back in because of the number of accidents that happen pulling out. People speed up and down the aisles not watching for people backing out.

I also hate gauging when pulling in and backing in as 10000 times easier.

Because it’s safer. Doesn’t take me three tries.

This is big in Maryland, I don't get it, it takes up so much time in parking lot.

Apparently they teach this as best practices in driving classes now

Because they lack the driving skills to back out of a parking space?
Because they love to zoom out when they drive off?
Because they like to make a big production and stop traffic?
Because they believe that is the best way to park, no matter how long it takes?
Because they are aholes?
etc.
etc...

Yup, this. I’m have good spatial awareness and it doesn’t add much time for me to back in. Regardless, I don’t mind wait a few minutes for someone to back in if it reduces injuries.
