Most overrated international destination?

Fuori come un balcone.

Sì, hai ragione.

+1 the first time I went to Paris as a teen I was shocked by how filthy it was and how different it was from my expectation - what a let down! And the food sucked!

We’re the oldest and greatest country on the earth, we have the highest standard of living, and we’ve never lost a war, we can judge whoever we want!

Oldest country on earth????

What school did you go to? We are one of the youngest.

I was educated here in America, home to the world’s best education and healthcare system.

You are pathetically ignorant, I am afraid.

Our health care system is #1 for cost alone. We trail behind most high income counties for outcomes/health indicators.

Try reading instead of waving your flag maybe.

You need to show some more pride in your country. The rest of the world combined has zero Super Bowl trophies, how do you explain that?

And the World Series! America is also number one in baseball!

Japan won the World Baseball Classic this year. Just saying.

Copenhagen

I suppose no one really glamorizes cities in India, but Delhi is a special kind of awful. Mumbai and Kolkata are interesting and have their charms, but Delhi... gah

South Africa. Absolutely beautiful country. But you can't move once the sun goes down. Even in Cape Town.

The American South Pacific. All of it. From Guam to FSM to the Marshalls. Walmart on an island. Depressing.

Tahiti. French Walmart on an island. Trashy place.

Can you elaborate on Kyoto?

Because it's not really an authentic place anymore. The temples and the old town are lovely architecturally, but what you tend to see are Japanese women cosplaying in their kimonos. Lots of couples doing their pictures. It's extremely touristy. It's a very manured place. Like a Japanese Disneyland. You go for the pictures and a few hours in pretend-land. The rest of Kyoto is pretty drab. You're going to have a more "real" experience in Osaka or Tokyo. The bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto is very cool though.

And I'm sure other tourists would complain if they went all the way to Kyoto and didn't see a single person in traditional kimonos like they expected to. Or the place was 'so authentic' that none of the locals understood English.

People who dismiss places as “inauthentic” crack me up. In DC “authentic”? Do the food trucks on the mall make the mall “inauthentic”? You want Colonial Williamsburg. You want a movie set built for you, not for the people who live there. Wild.

Where did you go?

Rome and Naples. Total dumps

Probably the two worst cities on the country. Go to Florence, Tuscany, the Amalfi coast and then update us.

I love *love* Rome and Naples. Florence and the Amalfi coasts have been almost (not quite but almost) ruined by mass tourism. Naples has soul. And I say this as someone who is skeptical when people talk about a place with soul. Naples really is unique and has fabulous food, possibly the best in Italy. And wonderful art and museums. And hasn't become an overly sanitized tourist ghetto.

Right?! This thread is a trip! I heard this kind of negative stuff about Naples so didn't plan to spend much time there, but I loved it and regretted that. I truly don't get what people are on about.

I dunno. Some of this is helpful. For example, Cabo was on my list. Had no idea the beaches are so dangerous. It’s true. Unlikely to go now, as I love going in the water. That’s what makes some Caribbean beaches so fun - barely any waves and you can totally relax.

I was about to say that all places have some value, but then I saw Dubai. Yep, I think that fits well in the overrated category.

Do the people who say they went to places in France, Italy, Spain and other countries generally very well known for good food, but then say that the “food sucked” ever think that maybe they just… went to the wrong restaurants?

Las Vegas.

Maybe I just hate fake desert cities!

Palm Springs too.

Love Muscat and Tucson, though.

Loved Dubai - awesome sightseeing and awesome food.
Loved Vegas too.

Not sure why Kyoto is coming up on this list.
It is one of my most favorite place visited. The natural beauty, the bamboo forest, the temples in the hilly lands, and the traditional restaurants pretty much everything seemed exquisite.

Someone said the capital cities are frequently not so great. A good example of that is Athens. It’s had only one mention here—not because it’s not blah, but because so few people have high enough expectations of it for it to be overrated.

is Heaven on Earth. It's expensive, and housing is not luxury - but it is glorious and not overrated in the slightest.

Funny, I was at the Lourve with my son a few months ago and was adamant that we were not going to go b/c it’s just crowded.

But once there we couldn’t NOT do it. So we went into the room…and I was actually really glad we did. It wasn’t about the ML, rather the experience of visiting her and watching the people queue up behind the painting of a woman politely smirking at her popularity.
