Except it's charming. YMMV. But yes obviously a big big city vibe where people actually work - not a city run by tourism.

I am from London and it is probably my favorite place in the world to live. That said, I am always surprised that Americans go there as one of their first international destinations for a vacation. There are a lot of places that are more scenic, more different from the US etc.

Any thoughts re small cities/towns outside of London? Is 3 days in Oxford or the like an overkill - for someone who loves walking thru cities, architecture, and staying in nice hotels? Like my ideal vacation day is wake up in a nice hotel, get coffee, go walk around/take a walking tour, sit and get lunch and watch the people go by, walk around some more, dinner (don't care all that much re food/not a foodie), and back to the hotel, rinse and repeat.

I spent 6 days in Winchester, UK back in Feb 2020. It’s about 90 minutes west/southwest of London. It was easy to get to by coach bus from the bus station at Heathrow. If you are interested in English history, King Alfred, and all that, it’s a fascinating place! There’s the Round Table Henry VIII commissioned, 12th century ruins of the old Bishops’ palace, and of course, Winchester Cathedral, with its own enormous history. And there’s a decent variety of good food, despite the size of the town.

I loved Bath.

Agree with this. I’d be quite happy to never have to go back.

Totally agree with the posters saying Brussels is underrated. I always have fun there!

I caught the mumps in Brussels!

I met a man in Brussels. He was 6 foot four and full of muscles.

Did he give you a Vegemite sandwich?

omg I needed this laugh today!

I was a teensy disappointed in Buenos Aires. I actually left a day early. Just ran out of things to do. Good place for 5-6ish days, including seeing outer areas. Probably a fun place to live meaning that you go out with friends, etc. As a tourist, my 8-day trip was a bit too long.

And i mean just a trip to BsAs, not the whole of Argentina, which is a huge and lovely country.

People who blithely dismiss cities like Rome, which contain some of the greatest treasures of art, architecture, and history that the world has ever produced, as “overrated”…

100%. I’ve been to every European place listed on here so far - none are really “over rated”. I do have preferences, like Spain instead of Italy. Everywhere in Europe instead of Germany. But if you do the right trip at the right time, there are amazing experiences everywhere.

Everyone loves to hate Paris, I’ve been around 10 times and I love it and I’m far from a Francophile.

Agree with this. I have been to every European country and Italy and Germany are my least favorite by far.

PP here. What is that supposed to mean? Have you also been to every European country? Or are you just another unsophisticated American who eats up the tourist trap that is all of Italy?

I hated it the first 3 times I went. Now I love it. Been 7 times (used to live in Europe) and I just avoid the areas I can’t stand.

Which areas do you avoid?

Basic Americans love to wax rhapsodic about their trip to Italy.

There no overrated destinations. There are under-researched destinations and unrealistic expectations (coupled with being spoilt by ability to travel).
