I don't know a single person at our school or any other school in DC who has been shamed or criticized for choosing to continue masking. I don't count anonymous messages on DCUM -- I assume those are from rightwing trolls trying to stir up disagreement.

If anyone has an actual example of a person in DCPS or a charter being shamed, bullied, or even mildly criticized for choosing to wear a mask, do share. But otherwise, let's not pretend this is happening because it isn't. We have enough problems right now, we don't have to invent pretend ones to get upset about.

Personal responsibility and risk assessment is key here. I have fulfilled my responsibility to society by vaccinating my family. Because of that fact, we are done masking. If you haven't fulfilled your responsibility to society by getting vaccinated, go ahead and mask, or don't, I don't care. But if I transmit a virus to you that you could have easily protected yourself from, that's on you.

I mean, if Black teachers really feel like they are being shamed for masking, and feel that white parents (mothers in particular) want to deny them agency over their own bodies, I wonder if they are basing this on actual real life experiences of shaming, or if they are just ascribing this attitude to the white mothers for other reasons. Let's not forget that in reality, it is the mask *mandate* that denies people agency over their own bodies, not the mask choice.

+1. I think we can all agree that COVID is never going away completely. If you’re quadruple vaccinated and STILL anxious, then it’s on you to mask indefinitely, not the entire rest of the world. Then again, we were triple vaxxed, masking, still got COVID, and the world did not end, so I’m out of faith in masks and anxiety over COVID.

I, a white woman who circles the internet daily, have never ever heard anyone shaming "Black teachers" for choosing to mask. This appears to be a story made up completely to create tension.

PP here and I agree, which is why I was so surprised that the other PP thinks that this "reflects the thinking of many". And not only the idea that white mothers shame Black teachers for masking, but that they don't believe that Black women "should be able to have any agency over their bodies (likely generally)". If that reflects the thinking of many, it reflects some serious paranoia, and makes me feel sorry for those teachers, not "hurt" myself. But as you say, I think it's just a couple of posters trying to stir the pot and sow discord. I don't believe DC teachers are this fragile.
