Seeing 15-20% price increases at my favorite restaurants , not tipping will just carry out

Interesting. So you tip the cashier that checks you out at WalMart? And you tip the person who hands you your sandwich at Chik-fil-A (and the one who took your order)? You tip the lifeguard at your community pool? You tip your child's daycare provider at Kindercare? You tip the parking lot attendant? And the ticket taker at the movie theatre? And more? All of the hourly workers you encounter in life you tip them 15-20%?


+1 I am interested in this question as well. Do you also tip the Amazon delivery driver? Or the courier who brings packages to your office?

The only people making “tipped” wages are restaurant servers serving dine in customers. That is what the tip is for. The dining service. Their employer is wrong is they are having them work a service that does not provide tips (take out) and still paying them the tipped wage. This is not a customer problem, it is an employer problem. Besides, they are legally entitled to minimum wage if they do not make it through tips. They can take that up with their employer.

Exactly this! The people who work at the take out counter are (or should be) making minimum wage. The servers and bartenders make less because the tip is expected because they are providing a service. The takeout counter people/hosts are being paid a higher wage. And if they aren’t, that’s illegal and the restaurant owner should be called out for that. Restaurants who expected their servers to make $3/hour to do takeout orders during the pandemic were insane. That’s why most servers took the unemployment because that’s just bad practice.
Look, I’m fine with tipping a few dollars for takeout as I get that it takes a few minutes to bag it up, add the utensils, etc. but I am not tipping 20% for a service that is not being provided. I might as well just eat at the restaurant. At this point with restaurants open for dining, by tipping at the counter, you’re actually hurting tipped service workers by giving a tip that could have been for them to their co-worker who is being paid minimum wage. Anyone who has worked in a restaurant should know this.

How long ago? I’m pretty sure the takeout volume is much higher right now, and seating/reservations much lower. And you definitely should’ve been tipped out by the servers. It’s part of the deal for taking a hostess gig.

I was also a hostess and did this. I made $8/hr and that was 20 yrs ago. I didn’t get tipped and servers didn’t “tip out.” My wage was more than minimum wage

I’m a nanny and make $22/hr after taxes. Is that poor enough for you? I can’t afford to eat in restaurants so once a month I treat myself to take out and no I’m not tipping on that. These waiters sat at home on unemployment for a year making more money than me. I’m in California and they make more than me, with over $15+ tips. I don’t feel bad. Im going to school and when I graduate, then maybe I’ll tip but for now the rest of you who feel so strongly about this can supplement my non-tipping.

If your finances are stable, you should reconsider. Otherwise, stay home and cook more. Get food out when you can afford to "do it."

I have noticed the price hikes too. We are tipping 20+% on carryout.

No, not one experience. I have worked at 8 different restaurants, from chain restaurants to fine dining, and never tipped out to the hostesses. Granted, this was over 10 years ago but even if the restaurants are experiencing more takeout orders than they have in the past, this has nothing to do with servers tipping hostesses. Servers have nothing to do with takeout orders--why should they have to tip out on them?
