I can see why this might be the best available option for a student....but I don't really appreciate the mindset it suggests. Cramming the bright-eyed new students into a schedule that is convenient for the school. Not really student-centered, more of a business mentality. |
Lol you new here? |
yea, I was joking about this with a neighbor. Did we screw our kids by moving into a high performing school? Big fish, little pond and all that. |
I believe if you select ED and are admitted, you application is voided at all other schools if not withdrawn. |
Do you think it helps or hurts to be at a PGCPS school? Are most of these posters reporting Montgomery County students? |
Average SAT scores at UMD have definitely risen over the past decade. Selectivity has decreased every year as well. It used to be seen as a party school. I don't think that is as accurate any longer. |
Definitely! Folks need rethink privates if it’s primarily for admissions. Same percentages from top MCPS HS and Big 3 into great and good schools! The privates marketing and sales departments are feeding you a lie. Why did privates eliminate AP courses around the same time studies pointed to better success on AP exams then privates…hmmmm. Save your money and use that account as your “scholarship fund” |
I think anywhere is better than coming from Montgomery. My guess is that they’re looking out for kids coming from the rural western counties. |
But schools also get a rankings boost when they demonstrate higher admissions standards for admits. Why would you pass on a higher stat student, regardless of intent? They will fill the fall class regardless. |
Not at all suggesting they pass on those kids. But it seems like they are passing on the next tier of MCPS kids who still have very strong stats for UMD. |
UMD admission comm has a deep knowledge of area public schools. It depends on what major the candidate above applied to. UMD is hard to get in some of the majors. Especially CS. Howard and Montgomery county schools are full of super high performing students and there are huge benefits of getting into UMD for the hard sciences at least. |
+ 1. Congratulations! It is a popular choice for Blair magnet alum (around 40% choose to attend UMD). He will have a great experience. |
Smith Business and Engineering as well! |
The stats have definitely gone up over the past 15 years. For the parent of the freshman, you have to cast a wider net when looking at colleges. Within MD, UMBC and then Towson are probably the next tier. Lots of kids look to out of state public schools especially if they want the life of being at a big state college with school spirit etc. and either don’t want to be close to home or may not have the stats for UMD. There are colleges where your child would be considered a strong applicant and where they could get a good education- the challenge is finding one where the money will work out and that works geographically for where your student is willing to go. |
I've seen lower OOS scores posting acceptances to UMCP on College Confidential. I doubt they are trolls. Those same posters have posted on other school threads. |
