ACT definitely not in line with GPA....red flag

This should not be a red flag. This will likely be my daughter next year. She has a slight learning disability but she excels in school because she is a very hard worker and is diligent. She just can’t seem to ace her standardized tests. Any school would be lucky to have her because she works hard and gets good grades.

Congratulations of course but with these stats it is a safety school for her. What school is she really hoping for?

Wow, just wow. Good for UMD. I guess I shouldn't be surprised since Maryland consistent tops the league tables for high school academic achievement. For example, Maryland had the highest PSAT threshold this year, higher than California and New York.

Congrats! Why disappointed Spring is still a yes just a semester late

There’s a good study abroad program for fall that is for Freshman Spring Admits and Freshman Connection students. That’s one option.

Another is community college in fall then transfer the credits.

A job or internship in area of interest is another way to fill the gap.

Wow! We weren't aware of the study abroad option at UMD. Our DS was admitted to Fresh Connect. Can you point us to the program's study abroad link? We can't find anything.

Thanks again!

That was me years ago. These days, I see more is done for those with problems. Not every person is a perfect robot. If a school truly values diversity of income and race and neurology, they will look past a number. I don’t think UMD is that school.

Wow. We should have moved to Alabama before kid took the PSAT! Lol!!

Where do you see that info? Higher than Virginia?

It’s gonna be a reach.

And I have no idea why people like you think trolls are so prevalent, on every thread.

This score is about the 87th percentile. No red flags here. This is a strong student.

The triumph of experience over hope.

Yep, higher than Virginia. You can go to the compass website to look at the table.

+1. If this is your child’s first choice and they want to be on campus in the fall, make sure you enroll in Freshman Connections (FC) after accepting the spring semester admission. Looking online, it looks like March 1st is when the FC form opens. The fact that there is an option to still be on campus in the fall IMO, makes a spring admit easier if the concern is that you don’t start with everyone else. There are some nuances to the FC program - classes are between 3pm-9pm M-Thu and 8-5pm on Friday and get a later registration priority in the spring of that year but the FC classes are smaller and after that semester, it’s the same class schedule as everyone else.

I am so pissed.

To add: applied Arts & Sciences

I’m a professor at UMD, a liberal arts department. This is bonkers to me. There is no way that some of the students I have in intro courses could have these high school grades and stats. Some of them can barely write a coherent paragraph.

Not even a Spring admit?

No. I am so upset. I am going to appeal but I realize it will have no impact. I don't know what the issue is. She could have tried test optional, maybe, but what's so wrong with 1400? 720 verbal. This process is a joke.

I am so sorry. My DC was accepted but not that much better stats. 33 ACT, 3.8uw. I’m sorry but how does an in-state applicant with 720 verbal applying to Arts and Sciences not get Freshman Connection?? I would be so pissed too. You pay taxes to Maryland, kid excels in school, over 92%tile test scores. Really sucks. So sorry.

Thank you! That's what I'm saying. I thought she would get spring admit. And yes, the taxes are hella high in this state and it would be nice to get something for it.

My youngest child is in the same boat. My husband’s job is now online and I have a skill set that I can easily get another job elsewhere. We were only considering staying in Maryland if he was admitted. We now are going to prepare to put our house on the market this spring. No more Maryland taxes after this year. Thank you UMD.

I should add that our family has a four generation legacy at UMD. My son applied for Letters and Sciences. 31 ACT. 4.5 Weighted GPA. MCPS.

Absolutely! Spouse and I are already discussing. I have no desire to be bilked by this state any longer.

I wonder if this will prove to be a mistake by umdcp - rejecting very strong MCPS candidates who would have likely attended. The tippy top may be more likely to go elsewhere. Or not - I don’t know these days. Scores have definitely been rising the past couple of years. It’ll be interesting to see.
