That is why he needs to be put on the spot and be held accountable.

Not only that, but he is also singlehandedly helping to destroy the environment. This is what’s at stake here.

This is why the Dems (I am one) can’t get anything done. You don’t eat an elephant in one bite. Stop trying to tie everything together in one huge deal. Let’s get infrastructure done. It’s bipartisan and helps the immediate need. Then let’s pass some of the more palatable and fiscally responsible initiatives, aka climate. At the same time let’s actually get rid of programs that aren’t working so we have the money to replace programs that we think will help.

Agreed

I will never for the life of me understand why the Dems threw everything all at once into that kitchen sink deal like it had a chance of passing.

Climate should be it’s own bill. Paid leave should be it’s own bill. Medicare expansion should be it’s own bill.

Do you really not get how our system of making legislation works? Bill needs to pass both House and Senate, but because of the filibuster, nothing can pass without Republican consent. It has long been McConnell’s strategy (which he successfully used against Obama) to block all legislation and run on a “the Dems can’t do anything” message. He can block all legislation by using the filibuster.

BUT, the filibuster doesn’t apply to the budget bill which is done once a year and the “budget reconciliation” bill which can also pass once a year. So for 2 bills a year which must contain only items which have a budget impact, the Dems can pass those bills with a simple majority, which they only have due to Kamala Harris being able to vote and break a 50D-50R tie.

So, anything the Dems want to pass that the Republicans don’t like - which is any climate change legislation, any paid family leave, childcare, expansions of Medicare, pharma negotiation, etc. - has to be loaded up in the one remaining budget reconciliation bill they have left to use this year.

This bill is going to pass. It’s just a question of what it will look like.

NP: That’s how it works. You don’t get to pass legislation without a mandate. Dems need to figure out how to work with Republicans, and, IMO, do the hard thing and figure out how to pay for all of this.

There is no time left to negotiate with people who have no intention of ever doing anything at all on climate change. Oil is a finite resource, period. Only a fool would just endlessly count on oil.

The GOP had no mandate in 2017 and yet they ignored the dems and passed a party line tax cut.

Moderate here. I am tired of this guy. Enough is enough. I suggest we slash all funding for WVA. It is basically a welfare state for which the rest of us are paying. This guy needs to get real.

1.5 Trillion what's not hard to understand here

He's made his demands known since July

Stan nothing.

Let's be 100% clear. There is one and only one reason why Manchin opposes this. It's because he's inextricably entangled with the fossil fuel industry. It's all about the money. Nothing else. No better than third-world banana-republic money corruption impeding progress. The man is an utter and total disgrace, he is giving the Senate a bad name.

Now divide 1.5 trillion by the ten years it’s spread over and compare it to the military budget…

On a board so overrun with “conservatives,” it’s nice to see reality-based comments.

An arbitrary number he's pulled out of his ass in order to obfuscate, rather than being more honest and forthright that it's just about his coal money.

Where were his big objections when Trump did massive tax cuts and added $7T to the debt?
Debt concern-trolling - is that a thing? That's what he's doing...

He's the best we're gonna do. If he loses or retires his replacement will be an unapologetic republican.

That's the problem right now. Destructive intransigence because half of our government is held hostage by greedy shortsighted fools.
