Biden strikes out with King Manchin

Anonymous
This is House leader Hoyer on the $1.75 Trillion offer from Biden. Don't know what he's saying.

Anonymous
The Hoyer comment comes right after the rumors about Manchin switching parties. Maybe this was him saying 'We can't lose the Senate, so need to hold the House vote on Infrastructure that he wants'?

Manchin knows how give a smooth threat. Major cajones

All hail the king! I’m actually hoping the queen gives a hard no.

That is why he needs to be put on the spot and be held accountable.

Not only that, but he is also singlehandedly helping to destroy the environment. This is what’s at stake here.

This is why the Dems (I am one) can’t get anything done. You don’t eat an elephant in one bite. Stop trying to tie everything together in one huge deal. Let’s get infrastructure done. It’s bipartisan and helps the immediate need. Then let’s pass some of the more palatable and fiscally responsible initiatives, aka climate. At the same time let’s actually get rid of programs that aren’t working so we have the money to replace programs that we think will help.

The Dems are putting the cart before the horse.

Automobiles were around for quite a while before horse and carriages were given up. They were not given up until technology and Ford made automobiles inexpensive and readily available. Clean technology is still too expensive and the charging of electric cars is not solved. Article in WAPO today--wher4 are people who park on the streets in their neighborhoods going to charge their cars? Not to mention road trips. No one wants to stop for three or four hours to charge their cars.

And, then there are the batteries--which include lots and lots of contaminants which are problematic.

And, what is this administration doing? Shutting down our current energy sources and making gas prohibitively high.

Agreed

I will never for the life of me understand why the Dems threw everything all at once into that kitchen sink deal like it had a chance of passing.

Climate should be it’s own bill. Paid leave should be it’s own bill. Medicare expansion should be it’s own bill.

We used to do that. Thirteen individual spending bills a year. Not one big omnibus bill where everything gets thrown in. That leads to sloppiness and it's expensive.

As if their original $6 trillion proposal wasn’t expensive?

Because the Republicans won’t work with the Democrats on ANYTHING. They have to do it thru reconciliation and thus you need one big bill.

Of course, Manchin and Sinema could vote to lift the filibuster.

But that’s why it’s one big package - the Republicans won’t negotiate

Do you really not get how our system of making legislation works? Bill needs to pass both House and Senate, but because of the filibuster, nothing can pass without Republican consent. It has long been McConnell’s strategy (which he successfully used against Obama) to block all legislation and run on a “the Dems can’t do anything” message. He can block all legislation by using the filibuster.

BUT, the filibuster doesn’t apply to the budget bill which is done once a year and the “budget reconciliation” bill which can also pass once a year. So for 2 bills a year which must contain only items which have a budget impact, the Dems can pass those bills with a simple majority, which they only have due to Kamala Harris being able to vote and break a 50D-50R tie.

So, anything the Dems want to pass that the Republicans don’t like - which is any climate change legislation, any paid family leave, childcare, expansions of Medicare, pharma negotiation, etc. - has to be loaded up in the one remaining budget reconciliation bill they have left to use this year.

This bill is going to pass. It’s just a question of what it will look like.

Legislation is blocked after the GOP holds the majority. Notice the ACA passed?

How is this bill going to pass if the debt ceiling by budget reconciliation has to be done in December?
