The White Lotus season 2

I was rewatching the episode where Daphne low key falsely imprisons Harper at the rented palazzo. Harper asks her if Cameron cheats. It’s obvious Daphne knows he cheats. So if she knew staying away would trigger Cameron to cheat, why did she do it? I don’t think it was just to spice up her and Cameron’s romantic dynamic (it’s nonsensical - let’s get my husband to be more attracted to me by pushing him away to someone else.). I think she might have done it because she thought it might make Ethan cheat too. In that case Harper would be at Daphne’s level, as far as being a cheated on spouse is concerned.

Actually he’s a ghost, as are Nonno and Dom, but he murdered them in the trip long ago and now they’re stuck perpetually on “vacation.”

In that same conversation, Daphne asks Harper if she thinks Ethan has ever strayed and Harper is totally confident he has not. The camera is on Daphne and she briefly looks incredibly annoyed at this response, so I think this could be right.

Actually, if you rewatch episodes (I haven’t done all of them but rewatched several when I was sick last week), one of the first things that jumps out at you is that the camera often catches these quick little reactions from Daphne to things, before she goes back to her sunny little smile. From the very first scene with her on the beach in the flash forward. The most telling ones involve Cameron. There’s one when Cameron goes up to Harper’s room with her to get Ethan’s swimsuit that makes it clear Daphne doesn’t trust her husband and suspects something might happen.

There’s the surface explanation of that marriage and Daphne’s personality, and then there’s another much more complicated version of both if you watch those little reactions from Daphne to what is happening. It’s clearly purposeful that the actress is doing it and that the camera so often catches it before moving on.

Ooh, Daphne lures Ethan on that secluded beach preview scene, gets him to cheat with her. Cameron kills Ethan in that preview underwater struggle.

Yep- Daphne lures Ethan after she finds out about Cam not paying Lucia. (Dumbass move on his part btw.) But I think Ethan wins that fight because in the E7 preview Harper asks Ethan what’s going to happen to us. The body Daphne finds isn’t anyone she knows/recognizes. I think that body fell of the Quentin yacht that was hightailing it out of one of the previews.

I am going to miss this thread once we actually see the finale!

There's a good Ringer podcast this week on different theories of what might happen in the finale. Starlee Kine is on it as a guest - her voice sounds so much less twee than it did back when she used to do podcasts! She's got a very dry presence on this pod.

Actually it’s a funicular ride.

I don't think it's likely that Ethan and Albie are the same person but the idea of two characters blending or blurring the borders between the two is appealing. I would also like to know what Quentin is hiding in his hair. Ever notice how almost every time a scene starts he's putting something back in his hair? A needle maybe?

This podcast has a lot of good info. Especially like the analysis of what social themes Mike White is commentating on with these characters and dynamics.

I am annoyed it's not until tomorrow night. All the comments from the cast and Mike White about how the finale is shocking have me on pins and needles. I want to see and either be shocked or disappointed that I'm not shocked. I'm not even that invested in the murder-mystery part of it (way more interested in the smaller dramas playing out in the relationships), but I also feel like this show has the potential to really pull a rabbit out of a hat here and want to see if they can do it.

I feel like this show belongs to a subgenre of its own that is hard to describe. I like a lot of TV shows but anticipate this one in a unique way. It's less "I can't wait to see what happens" and more "I'm scared to see what happens but my fear is exciting." Like horror except it's not horrific. Like horror where their gore is existential, not physical or even mental. Like "what if the thing that person bases their reason for living on gets taken away from them, will their entire personality dissolve?"

You mean like if Albie gets burned so bad he turns into a misogynist or if Cam risks losing Daphne so he loses his cool and becomes a murderous beast. Also Portia is getting more than she bargained for when she got her wish for some vacay excitement. Ironically it was Tanya who said it best when she noted that if you are empty you end up in some strange places, and not good ones.

Also, what will the piano player do with himself if he is no longer allowed to play the piano. He is the main one at risk of losing his purpose in life and therefore having nothing left to lose.

Maybe piano player will come back (rightfully) pissed at Mia and Valentina will accidentally kill him.
