Piqued my interest so I checked out The Virginian ... hosted by the “Hatchet Boyz” of SYC lol ... hard pass ... not interested in dirty playing and lunatic coaches screaming all game. The 50 minute drive to Maryland is enjoyable by comparison. |
| Didn't want to show local competitor clubs how poor their teams are in comparison. |
Apparently it was fair enough competition for every other Northern Virginia team. Was at four matches. Didn't see any dirty play. |
Yes. Because Maryland teams never ever ever travel to Virginia for tournaments.

I’d have taken Columbia instead of our ECNL trip down to Richmond. That drive down 95 in the rain on Saturday sucked and the drive back yesterday wasn’t any better. |
Vienna doesn't have ECNL. Another reason why they're losing kids left and right. |
Not as many as Arlington. I have it on good authority that Arlington lost 8 times as many players as Vienna to other clubs this season. Even more than that on the girls’ side. |
| Btw, the above is total crap and I have zero evidence to back up my claim, but then again, neither do the other posters making similar claims about Vienna… |
Many of the brackets were loaded with good teams at Columbia tournament. It was a very good event and competition, better than Virginian IMO. |
| Can say that my kid's current team has three FORMER Vienna players on it. And several more who tried out but didn't make it. |
The difference in attrition is that VYS players who leave are generally moving to first teams of top clubs and McLean/Arlington players generally move because they were not asked to remain on top teams. Draw your own conclusions. |
Why do the talented kids leave VYS, if I'm understanding your observation correctly? |

My son played house soccer and his first years of travel soccer at Vienna. We left for another club some years back.
Over the course of time and seeing other clubs, I see Vienna as a decent, ethical club. Many of the really lousy things you see at other clubs (over rostering, flagrant lying, abusive coaches, uniform & futsal kickbacks etc) do not happen at Vienna or at the least will be handled. There are many reasons some age groups are not successful competitively over time. But realize that at least some are - many on the girls side and a few on the boys side. These reasons are not unique to Vienna and a number of other Fairfax County clubs face them as well. One way to look at it is it is a large club trying to be a lot of different things to a lot of different people and ultimately in some age groups not being just right for enough of them. Which is a long way of saying, this 138 page is kind of strange and not sure why it continues. There is nothing unusual or bad about Vienna. From an ethical and fair play perspective which should be important to all of us, Vienna is better than most. |
It is a large club in terms of the geographic area at its primary base; however, VYS is not large compared to other organizations. There's nothing stopping Vienna from doing what Arlington, McLean, BRYC, Loudoun and others have done in terms of developing high level older teams. Maybe that's purposely not their niche, but kids are leaving at the U12 and U13 age bracket. There also seems to be a focus on individual skills development vs. team play. Bethesda, Alexandria, and others don't really have superior talent at the younger ages. They just do a better job of teaching how to move the ball. |
| VYS is not a large club and it is ridiculous to compare them to large clubs like Bethesda, Arlington, Loudoun or even McLean and Alexandria, which draw from a much larger pool of players. VYS is fine and they do really well when compared to other smaller clubs. |
