CORONAVIRUS/COVID-19 NEW MEGA THREAD

The testing situation seems good, with centers being set up and the ability to get results in six hours apparently. Our health care system could however be easily overloaded.

My aunt had a suspected brain aneurysm two days ago and has received excellent health care (flown into a larger centre surgery right away, recovering well), but I wonder how that situation would play out in a few weeks once the virus has spread.

I am frustrating the Federal Government isn't encouraging employees to work from home, that's a huge segment of our population working in tight quarters and taking public transit everyday. Employees are still being told it's a low risk situation. Private companies are doing a much better job encouraging people to work from home.

It's March Break here next week and our stupid Premiere just told everyone to enjoy their vacations. I predict schools will be closed when everyone gets back, or within a few days when it's clear how many people have been exposed. New Brunswick has already told anyone returning from March break to expect to stay home and self isolate for two weeks.

A couple of hours later, and now our Prime Minister is in self quarantine while his wife is tested, and all schools in our province (Ontario) are closed for the next three weeks (next week was already March/spring break and then two weeks of closures for COVID-19). A testing centre is being set up for our city in my neighbourhood. Things are moving fast!

Will Alberta and BC follow suit? What sprung the change for Ontario?

Hey fellow Canucks!

What's really odd to me is that universities in Ontario haven't yet closed. UofT and York closing alone would make a big dent in density on the TO subway...

There was a big spike in #cases today - 17. And two are under the age of 18.

FYI, 12 cases of the 59 in Ontario are due to travel to the US. Of the 17 today, 7 were due to US travel. Wondering if PM will close our borders soon.

This site has the best stats. US is on track to follow Italy. Not good.

In addition to closing schools for 2 weeks, MD is calling in the national guard on standby for their medical assistance, prohibiting gatherings over 250 people, encouraging social distancing, limiting hospital visitors, and shutting down it's cruise port. I'm glad Hogan is taking this crisis seriously.

I am not sure what you are inferring that from. You can't just look at the number of cases--the number per capita is important. And Worldometer gives you that.

The US is sandwiched between Germany (more cases) and Switzerland (fewer cases). But if you look at cases per million of population you get a much different story:

Germany: 33
US: 5
Switzerland: 100

What this means is that we have a much better chance of routing the virus more easily than Germany and a whole lot easier than Switzerland because we are still at a stage where non-pharmaceutical measures can work to slow down spread. (Switzerland I am afraid is past this.)

If we act NOW to close down schools, ban public gatherings, and suspend religious services we have a very good chance of flattening the curve. A lot of other countries are now looking at Italy and saying that is not what we want to happen. Ireland and Belgium have taken these actions. France, Spain, and Germany are now closing down schools but they are much alter in the cycle than we are.

I know this isn't helpful, but maybe if I vent here, I will feel better.

Is anyone else mad at China? All this death and suffering because of unsanitary markets that should have been shut down after SARS. Plus initial government dishonesty.

Just seems so unnecessary .

This is good. We need to slow the spread. Every state should be doing this.
