State Senate elections in Virginia are happening at the same time as the School Board elections. They're in November of 2023, meaning that policy change won't happen until January 2024. |
It seems like the VDOE under Youngkin would have policy levers over Governor's Schools in Virginia prior to the 2023 elections.
After all, it was Atif Qarni's demand that local school systems operating Governor's Schools come up with "diversity plans" that led Brabrand to change the TJ admissions process. At a minimum, the VDOE might demand that local school systems operating Governor's Schools not employ certain "experience factors" in their admissions processes that are understood to discriminate against some students based on their SES in order to benefit other students. |
Qarni lent his support to the effort, and put his foot in his mouth more than a few times in the process, but the changes weren’t driven by him. They were driven by the School Board and Brabrand. The genesis was when the admissions numbers for 2024 were released in the days immediately following George Floyd’s murder at the hands of the state of Minnesota. TJAAG brought the numbers to the ensuing Board meeting, and things started moving. |
Is there some reason that it is difficult to understand that benefiting students who come from disadvantaged situations is not discriminating against students who come from advantaged situations? |
Not so clear-cut if you look at the data of who benefited. Divide and rule in an old game. |
FU. I pay taxes. Hardly a free ride. |
Apart from the fact that they acknowledges they were reverse engineering the process to benefit certain minorities at the expense of others and that it was anti-Asian? |
and the whites |
They don’t want any smoke with the whites though. Those other groups have long been getting screwed over. Keep screwing them over and give the spots they deserve to the Asians. |
Your taxes will pay for a nice quality experience at Lewis High. |
This is where there is a lot of noise. As an Asian I have no issues with a process that yields better outcomes for URMs at TJ. I totally get the impact of inter-generational discrimination against the AA community and I am supportive of affirmative action that should yield a class like the one for TJ’25. My issue is that was rushed through last year was politically expedient and flawed from a process perspective. There was no need for the hurry from the board and Braband. They could have taken time and consulted folks. But they could not wait because politics came before student welfare. So this is about doing the right thing- affirmative action and a well thought out process vetted via wide consultation. This is not about Asians vs URMs. Bug that narrative suits the extremists on all sides |
Let's be honest here. The narrative and the results suit the majority community - in more than one way. And definitely doesn't hurt them....The focus should be to increase quality of programs at home schools. Not drag down TJ. So much damage and bitter feelings. Not good for anyone. |
Wow, it says a lot why Asians are discriminated in this country. You don't even give a damn about your own interest and pretend other races would care for you. Simply stupid. |
I am an asian and I do not mind making changes to increase the diversity. However, I hate to say its not well thought out and not all factors were taken into consideration. AAP center schools are at a disadvantage as every school gets the same minimum quota and its a lot easier to get into TJ from a non AAP center school than AAP center school. Also, there is no preference for a smarter or hard working kid who took all honors courses in middle school along with Geo HN/Algebra II HN and STEM focus electives compared to someone who just took the easier route of Algebra I in 8th grade and got the similar GPA. In my opinion TJ will be slowly watered down in over all quality as it is forced to cater to a much wider range of students than earlier, though still going to be better than other high schools in the area. |
TJ is definitely worse off because they are allowing in non aap students. They don't have the academic levels to thrive at the school. I hate to see what their grades will be this semester. |
