Is uva a prestigious college?

+1. Statistically, UVA is ahead of Michigan. It's now become very difficult to get into. I agree with those above who think the UVA-bashing may be disgruntled students or parents. Many families close to me did not get their UVA legacy admitted this year. These are triple-legacy families who have extensively supported UVA and, of course, their kids have the 4.44+ GPA and 35-36 ACT and necessary ECs. This is a very upsetting issue for NoVA families, especially legacies, trying to get in from NoVA.

Not a NoVA family. My kid isn’t applying to UVA any time soon. I still think UVA is overrated.

And your opinion is more important than Forbes, USN&WR, Princeton Review, Kiplinger's, etc. etc. etc. exactly why?

Three of my kids got accepted to UVA, and two of them went. They got a prestigious education at an in-state price, had a great time and made lifelong friends, and everyone is impressed. I’m very happy we made the decision.

Where are you applying? Could your DC get in if he/she did apply? Be honest.

My kid isn’t applying this year. I go on this board to see what the discussions are like around various colleges. My assertions come from being married to someone who works in higher ed and from my own experiences at both public and prep schools.

I think UVA is overrated, as does my husband, who works with universities all over the country, and has relationships with deans at UVA, Michigan, and many other universities.

Cool. So the reasons are a secret the? The moms in my neighborhood think UVA is the zenith, the most coveted of all acceptances. And these are kids in the top 10% of their class.

Your kid may not be applying this year, but I can virtually guarantee you that when he or she does he or she will not get in. Seems like you’re bracing yourself for that.

Nice theory you’ve got there. Defensive much?

It has been a top ranked school for as long as I can remember and prestigious in the eyes of the many who consider it a public Ivy along with Michigan and Cal. Increasingly selective, it clearly has national cache due to intense competition from out of state students (not to mention many in state who are disappointed when they don't get in). It's not only popular with Virginia students or mid Atlantic, students come from all across the country and internationally to study at UVA. Don't let anyone tell you it isn't a top school or prestigious.

I agree with this. I honestly think that much of the anti UVA bias comes from parents whose kids were already rejected or who anticipate that they won’t or can’t get in.

I imagine there is definitely resentment from some parties based on admission rejections. I perhaps have a different type of resentment. My background is that I went to W&M undergrad and UVA for grad school (business) and I grew up near Charlottesville. So I have a lot of respect for UVA (where I obviously have the somewhat different vested interest of a grad alum). I think I know UVA's strengths and weaknesses pretty well. I do get miffed sometimes when some people attached to UVA put down W&M in an off hand way or write it off with baseless slight. I think W&M provides a great undergraduate experience for the right type of person and can be great alternative to UVA. I imagine people attached to other schools in Virginia (or Maryland and other areas) may feel the same way. They might say there is some conceit involved, even though it may only be characteristic of a small set of UVA supporters.

This is just one fossil’s opinion from the 1990s, but I too went to W&M undergrad and then UVA for grad school. I think I did it the right way (I wanted a smaller undergrad) and many of my peers agreed. Sure, I heard some jokes from several people about why would anyone subject themselves to W&M grading and lack of fun. I liked both places and I feel very lucky. But there’s no doubt: UVA is the hot school in nova neighborhoods now. Moms want the bumper sticker.

My husband runs a team that develops marketing and sales analytic models for universities. He has quantitative data to back up the assertion that UVA is less of a draw for kids than Michigan. It is considered less desirable. I doubt moms in your neighborhood have more authority on this matter than his team does.

Me either. Apparently that pp is of the opinion that UVA is "overrated" but doesn't want to say why. Maybe she wants to keep it a secret or maybe she doesn't really have a good reason.

All of the schools on the original Public Ivy list are prestigious, with the exception of Vermont and Miami of Ohio.

I explained it in the post above this one. My husband’s team has models showing Michigan is more attractive.
