I think this guy is an idiot. This is super embarrassing for black people in DC--not because I have anything to do with him, but because I know people generalize to all black people when one of us does or says something stupid--as this thread has proven many times over.

Like I said, I am a Jewish liberal who is disgusted by White’s remarks and think that the Jews and non Jews on the Council have played this very wrong. PP here, thank you. I live in a heavily black and Jewish neighborhood, and I’d imagine most of my neighbors share your sentiments about these remarks.

I remember hearing conspiracy theories about the Illuminati, Trilateral Commission etc., before, but only as a teenager (never heard any about Jews, AFAIK). However, I was a *teenager.* It’s ridiculous that this guy is espousing these theories as a adult, and it shows his lack of critical thinking skills. Also evident is our low expectations of our public officials if we tolerate this.

PP here. Yes, I also live in the neighborhood. I'm glad we live where we do, where people of all races/religions coexist peacefully, kids play together, etc.

The only anti-Semitism I can recall hearing about here is when our neighborhood was targeted with anti-Semitic flyers a couple years ago--many expressed their outrage via the listserv.

It's an opportunity to teach Ward 8 residents that bigotry against blacks is not the only form of unacceptable prejudice - that bigotry against Jews is just as bad, and will not be tolerated. To do otherwise would teach the opposite lesson.

Is it possible that he, or now some of his constituents thanks to his anti-Semitic conspiracy theory, think on some level that today's snowstorm is actually the Jews' fault? That's the damage someone like White can cause.

Your post was deleted because it used the example of a speaker at a local restaurant two years ago as evidence of widespread anti-Semitism among progressives. I personally have never even heard of Christopher Bollyn, rarely know who speaks at Busboys and Poets, and have no idea what I was doing two years ago. But, my failure to protest demonstrates nothing about how I feel about anti-Semitism.

Folks, nearly every Council member (and maybe even every one of them) has issued a statement criticizing White's anti-Semitism. So has the Mayor. They have all stressed that anti-Semitism has no place on the Council. White has apologized and is working with members of the Jewish community to further educate himself. Why do you ignore all of this and act like anti-Semitism has any acceptance whatsoever among mainstream Democrats?

You will get no further traction on the issue of anti-Semitism because that has been addressed to the satisfaction of most Council Members and, more than likely, to White's constituents. I still feel he should be sanctioned in some manner, if not removed from the Council, for being an anti-science conspiracy theorist. He may excused for not knowing that his conspiracy theory was anti-Semitic, but not for having a conspiracy theory in the first place.
