Prediction: Gillespie wins

There were no Republicans OR Democrats outside my polling place in Great Falls. Probably due to the rain. But nice try!

PP here. Mine had two Dems despite the rain. I guess they're just more enthusiastic.

With 20% of the vote counted, and 99% of Fairfax out, NYT live updates says Northan by 2.9%. NYT estimates Northam by 6% when all votes are counted. Dem AG and Lt,p. governor candidates estimated to win by even more.

Fingers crossed.

You would piss your pants if you walked through Culmore

I get food from from Peking Gourmet all the time. The neighborhood is pretty sketchy, however I am never bothered or in fear of anything.

Bush the Senior loved that place. Hard to imagine a presidential motorcade to beautiful downtown Culmore, but it happened. Many times.

My guess is Dems will win. In this case, not sure it matters, given he's ex-military and a physician. And Gillespie is a Bush dude. Both are moderates in their parties.

I plan to enjoy Virginians and their imports melt down when what they think they want becomes what they didn't expect.

I think Northam will take it.

Northam is going to curb stomp Gillespie.

Good to see the white supremacists and their racist campaign go down in flames.

Arlington doesn't matter much, north or south.

I agree that Arlington itself isn't going to be a deciding factor in this race, but I still found it interesting. It's not uncommon to not see Republican volunteers at polling places on off years when we're just electing local officials (because the Republicans typically don't even put up candidates for those), but I don't remember the last time we had a governor's race and there wasn't a single person there from the Arlington GOP handing out sample ballots. Given how tight this race is, if anything I would have thought that both parties would have people everywhere they could to try to capture those last few voters who are wavering. Maybe my polling place is just a fluke, but I do wonder if the lack of any republican representation there indicates that republicans are feeling a bit more lukewarm about their candidates, and thus not so enthused about coming out in crappy weather to help them win.

It's also interesting to me that even though I'm hearing reports that turn-out numbers around here have been high so far, none of my local Republican friends who have always posted "I voted" Facebook status updates in the past have been silent so far. Maybe they just haven't gotten there yet, but my Democrat friends have been turning out in droves. Obviously me looking at my Facebook feed is about as far from scientific as it gets, but it does feel like there's an enthusiasm gap here in northern Virginia. If the turn out really is high but the Republicans are staying home, it's cause for hope.

I haven't noticed that gap at all, at least in real life discussion. FB is a different matter and I know my liberal friends *love* to make statements on FB. I think the difference is that my Republican friends don't feel the need to virtue signal. Every liberal friend I have rushes to FB or Instagram to document any "cause" they take part in. Really annoying.

Um... Arlington absolutely matters. In fact, Arlington/Fairfax/DC suburbs generally make or break the election for Democrats in VA. Big turnout in that area = good for Dems

Other Arlington poster here, Arlington does matter in that sense, but it's not like it's a swing jurisdiction where the state will go the way Arlington goes. We can look to Arlington for signals about how the Dems are doing generally, but since there are so few Republicans here, it's harder to get a sense of how they're doing generally based on sampling from Arlington (although when their volunteers don't even show up at the polls, that is telling).

Is it though? There were no Dem. or Rep. handing out flyers outside of my polling place today. Thank goodness, because I hate running the gauntlet on my way in to vote. Obviously, the rain made ALL of them leave/not show up.

Meh. Deplorables don't want to be called deplorables.

+1 It wasn't Northam who did that commercial. It was the Latino Victory Fund. And to me, it's the reverse Willie Horton ad. If the GOP can play to fears by threatening people with the specter of people of color committing crimes against white people, then the Democrats can very well raise the specter of a racist coming after non-white American children.

Yes, because "racist" IS the Democrats' favorite word, after all.
