Parents around here are crazy what a dumb end goal for your kid

What was dumb?

TJ mom here: Worth it? Its not a guaranteed entrance to the Ivies and the several other top tech schools. Only 20% of the grad class does that. If your DC loves tech and wants to work very hard it is a good school. But the competition for those top spots in extreme.

TJ is especially worth it for your kid if going there is an end in and of itself -- eg. your kid comes up with the idea of TJ on his/her own, based on his/her interests in STEM. The idea of using it as a stepping stone to a particular college is misguided.

What about sports? Does going to Tj increase odds of getting more notice in sports?

TJ is known for crew, swimming, tennis and few other sports. There is more opportunities to play sport since most students get to play if they wanted to play unlike other schools. TJ just had a world class swimmer (Senior) recruited by the top schools and many crew kids are recruited by the Ivy League schools. Easier to make the cheer leading squads as well.

More TJ students (as a percentage of the student population) play 1 or more sports than regular high schools which is counter intuitive.

It's not worth it if it separates siblings.

It's worth it if your kid wants to go to medical school, top law school or good graduate program because it does a good job of preparing the kid for college and for the built in 8th period.

It's worth it for the unique courses and the various research/mentorship opportunities. Most kids enter college with 25 to 50 AP credits.

You haven't met my husband, who made it through well enough but will never send our kids there.

Please ask your husband to do an AMA about TJ. Would love to hear his viewpoint.

He would probably say the same old things like "too cut throat", "commute is too long", "want well rounded education", "too many Asians", "easier to get to good colleges from other HS".

With the exception of the comment about Asians (which is racist and horrible), those are all perfectly valid reasons to not go to TJ.

"too cut throat" Not really, just bunch of smart and motivated kids so hopefully the good work ethic and ambition will rub off on your kids
"commute is too long" No pain no gain, There is no free lunch
"want well rounded education" You certainly get a well rounded education perhaps better than most places
"too many Asians" Nothing more to say
"easier to get to good colleges from other HS" Not true. Easier to get into top 30 schools from TJ. In fact about 90% of the TJ grads will head off to top 30 schools. Can't say that about other high schools.

For the last time a smart kid has the same chance of going to a great school wherever they go to high school. Cream will always flow to the top.

You should go to TJ if a student has an interest and aptitude in STEM that's it.

Well said. You're way too sensible for this board.
