Neighbor Complaining About Our Lawn Care - Weeds/Pests

How does it reflect poorly?

IMO, those flags warning people to stay off the lawn due to recent pesticide applications reflect poorly on a neighborhood. Why spray crap all over the lawn and then warn people that they can't play on it? WTF is the point of having a lawn then?

Exactly! Plus some weeds are quite pretty. We get some great purple "weed" flowers and those yellow buttercups. Let me guess, the poster who got all anal about lawns and how it reflects on the neighborhood...

a.) Has no children
b.) Has children and doesn't give a fuck about the possibility of neurological damage from pesticides. Keeping up appearances are everything and if the children suffer we will just hide them in the closet.
c.) Is elderly and doesn't realize that the pesticides of today are dangerous and most people don't have time to pick weeds daily or even once a week.
d.) Plans to sell their house soon and cares more about getting every possible dollar than the health of their neighbors.

Why are people so lacking in understanding? You don't need pesticides to get rid of weeds. Seed your lawn. You'd be amazed at what putting grass on your lawn can do.
12:31, you sound like a raving lunatic.

But who wants grass? It is an unnatural monoculture that needs tons of attention. Add some clover, some dandelions and some chickweed, and you have something that just needs mowing.

I suppose that works for some. I seeded our lawn every year for the first four years without much progress so I've haven't bothered lately. Lousy soil, too much shade and too much kid and bike traffic leave me with crab grass, wild onions, dandilions, some random grass-like things and some sections of actual turf. After the kids move out and I earn $50k more than I do now, I'll get around to actually preparing the soil, aerating it and growing some nice grass. And I won't permanently park a car in the front yard like that other guy on the street.

The key to feeling good about living in a non-HOA neighborhood is not being the WORST guy on the block.

Totally agree. I always check out the other lawns to make sure at least one is worse than ours. We keep ours mowed, at least, which a couple neighbors don't, so we are good. I happen to like clover and other weeds. Love the violets and buttercups in the spring. It makes the yard much more attractive. It looks like the yard I grew up with -- mostly grass but other stuff mixed in. When it's freshly mowed you don't see the clover unless you are right on top of it. When it's not freshly mowed, you can see it, but I don't mind at all. Most of the houses on the street are the same way.

I agree with the posters who said if the neighbor doesn't like it, he can suck it. It's OP's yard, she can do what she pleases. Doesn't sound like it's terrible anyway, so the neighbor should mind his own business.

I'm sorry why can't this be a family event?

Yes because of course no HOA = Tacky low class trashy neighborhood, and HOA = Uptight yuppie busybodies with nothing better to do policing each other's yards to ensure a perfect Stepford like environment.

Anonymous wrote:The fickleness of DCUM posters never ceases to amaze me. A few weeks ago there was a poster who complained about chain link fence in the neighborhood (making the neighborhood unattractive) and everyone went crazy calling him/her an elitist, stupid, and worse. Now the OP has a neighbor who is complaining about weeds in her yard and posters are telling her that she should not only do something about it, including using pesticides and a lawn service, but that she could actually get sued. Huh?

I was one of the main ones calling the chain link op a snob...... because she was one. Declaring something white trash IS a bit elitist, especially when you continue after it's pointed out that chain link is more cost effective to some people.

This one is more about OP's neighbor over stepping his bounds. And I do believe most of the litigation nonsense is just that: nonsense. Except for that one troll who swears his friends roommate sisters cousins nephews great uncles dogs vet won a big lawsuit for getting stung.

Disagree, it's a double standard. Letting weeds grow and not using a lawn service is more cost effective to some people too, though most of the posts on this thread seem to be siding with OP's neighbor. We regularly mow our lawn but by week's end the dandelions start to emerge, especially in early summer. Anyone who tells me I need to get a lawnservice and use chemicals because it hurts their property in some way or makes the neighborhood unattractive can suck it.

Lots of hostile, nasty people on this thread, all defending their weeds. Interesting.

I am the PP who wondered why it was not okay for the OP a couple of weeks ago to vent about chain link fence and yet there's an overwhelming number of people on this thread defending the neighbor who is concerned about weeds on this OP's lawn. What a double standard! It's okay to have chain link fence because it affordable though ugly as sin, but it's not okay to do the best you can to keep weeds at pay by mowing them down because you create an eyesore for the neighborhood and attract bees that might sting your neighbors (who will then sue you). Again, the arbitrary and fickle nature of this forum never ceases to amaze me.

I have enjoyed this whole thread, and this auto-correct is the icing on the cake.
