Yes, I love how on DCUM, in 90% of the topics, everyone is wrong. There are a small handful where there is a majority consensus, but it's amazing how often everyone is wrong. |
weeds, of course not. that would be a dick move to complain about. none of my business.
if they were not cutting their lawn at all (say, every 3 weeks) so it was 18 inches high, then you can complain. |
If it's clover, it's not a weed -- some people plant it in their lawns. I think it adds nitrogen to the soil.
If it's hairy bitter cress, which also has white flowers, this is a highly aggressive weed that shoots seeds manically and spreads rapidly, including from yard to yard: http://www.gardenersworld.com/how-to/problems/weeds/hairy-bitter-cress/471.html Maybe you could identify the plants and respond accordingly. |
I love old timely lawns that have all sorts of "weeds" - clover, buttercup, sour grass, etc. If my thumb were green instead of black, I would have a flower and vegetable garden. I am one of the people who gets headaches and mild nausea from even limited exposure to any real concentration (like walking through a recently sprayed subdivision, for example). A bright green monoculture doesn't really say anything to me about good upkeep; it reminds me of my lawn fanatic neighbor when i was a kid. He mowed three or four nights a week - just a little bit off the top! And ALWAYS at supper time - weed whipper, out there with his bottle of roundup in addition to getting sprayed by a service. A pristine lawn does not a good homeowner make. |
just beautiful beyond the chain link fence, your dream and utopia ![]() |
put those friggin' kids to work.... |
I thought I was living in the far west away from civilization! I see this type of cancerous pest exists all over the world. Complaining about the neighbour's lawn. Jesus Christ! Why don't they just mind their own f'ing business?! |
huh |
There are environmentally friendly options. We too live in a middle class hood where everyone sprays their lawns with chemical crap. I refuse to do that. We use corn gluten in the spring as a pre-emergent (prevents weeds from growing and also feeds grass). Then we overseed in the fall. Keep it mowed and trimmed neatly. That's really all you have to do and looks perfectly nice.
Anyone who doesn't like it can kiss my ass. I don't like them spraying toxic pesticides all over the damned place but I keep my mouth shut. Their house, their rules. My house, my rules. That's how it goes, folks. |
I would love to be the attorney defending the clover people, seriously.
Do some people really, truly have nothing better to do but notice what their neighbors are doing? If so, I suggest the whiners move to an HOA neighborhood themselves. They are not the HOA! |
If you were my neighbor, you'd get an earful about that. My kids and my dog play there, and it's MY legal property. You have no right to do that. |
Take photos/video and submit to the proper authorities. Certain agencies salivate over these issues, justifiably so! I, for one, am glad to have my tax paying dollars go against obnoxious, antagonistic neighbors - seriously. They can and will be fined heavily, as they should be. |
Word. All these people complaining about weeds bringing down their neighborhood puzzle me. I'm waaay more concerned about the health effects of pesticides, both acute effects on wildlife, beneficial insects, and people, but also the chemicals getting into the groundwater and our streams. But I'm not about to go ask my next door neighbor not to use them. |
The City Code of Concord, CA makes certain your lawn is not your own. Our neighbors OWN us. It is sickening and depressing and yet it continues. We're in a drought, so we don't water. We, too, do not want to coat the dry lawn with chemicals. I'd give anything to be able to afford a lawyer to fight back. BTW, not everyone can afford a lawn service either. |
OP, have you called a lawn service to investigate the safer options? I have two kids and two dogs and work full-time, so I contacted Weed Man and they were able to use a solution that was harmless to all. It was pretty inexpensive also, maybe like $60. |
