I should read safety plans about a camp my kids don’t go to? What a strange hobby. |
Nope. They can make their own decisions and we can discuss our opinions on those decisions on this DISCUSSION BOARD. You seem extremely confused about the purpose of this site. |
The tragedy of Camp Mystic and the hubris of the Eastland family is national news. As a parent who has sent my kids to sleepaway camp, I have discussed Camp Mystic with friends and read about it on this site. We are truly astounded by the greed of the Eastlands and their push to reopen the camp without basic safety plans in place. Imagine being a parent who sends their daughter back to this place? |
You seem to care a lot about what other people think and are trying to control the opinions and comments of posters you don't know. FWIW, I have a lot of family member and friends in Texas and don't care what you think about our opinions of what occurred at Camp Mystic. |

Here is what is lacking/deficient in the UPDATED Camp Mystic emergency plan (not the plan in place prior to 7/4/25 but the supposedly "updated" plan after the flood) according to the state of TX:
- an accurate map of which buildings are/are not in a flood plain - emergency plans to staff, not just for a flood but for a variety of issues including a fire or an active shooter -no specific plan for how to evacuate during a flash flood (!!!!!!) -no plan for how to respond should a severe injury or death occur at the camp This is just some of the issues listed in the ELEVEN PAGE letter from the state of Texas regarding the camp's deficiencies. Also, 10 days ago, Ed and Mary Liz Eastland testifying in a hearing regarding the civil case of one of the camper's:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8c8NqBchro There is a TRO in place preventing the camp from using or altering parts of the Guadalupe River camp to preserve evidence for the case. Camp operators are trying to renovate/reuse some of the non-sleeping areas from the flood site. Hope those 800 families still supporting the camp have a backup childcare plan for the summer! |

Truly shocking camp safety management deficiencies. I just can't understand the complacency of the camp owners. |
“Control the opinions” ha it seems like you can’t handle a conversation. People in Texas aren’t sweating this nearly as much as you. |
You are finally getting it! Those families “not sweating” the glaring deficiencies of this camp are exactly what we are here discussing. I’m glad we could clear that up. |
You can discuss and some of us can recognize it has nothing to do with anything. It effects those families and nobody else. |
If it has nothing to do with anything, what are you doing here? I'd make other summer arrangements if I were you - I don't think your current plan is going to be available. |
You are the one who is trying to stop the conversation. |

Had the lowest lying cabins simply been permitted to evacuate (like the counselors were begging to do) they could have gotten to safety/higher ground at the rec hall in 45 seconds on foot.
The Eastlands waited 2 hours to begin evacuations from the emergency warning, after they had moved horses and canoes. Even then, they only allowed some cabins to evacuate. Evacuation timeline explained at the 2:30 mark https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnScj_EwoxU |

The actually testimony of staff is appalling:
Testimony from April 2026 regarding the July 2025 Camp Mystic flood, which resulted in 27 deaths, revealed significant failures in emergency communication, training, and leadership action. Key Staff Testimony and Admissions (April 2026) Edward Eastland (Director): Testified he did not see official flood warnings issued the day before the storm and admitted, "I wish we never had camp that summer". He acknowledged that lives could have been saved if staff had acted sooner, but insisted the severity of the storm was not anticipated. Mary Liz Eastland (Chief Health Officer): Admitted in court that she did not call 911 or deploy nurses, missed official flood alerts, and stated "yes" when asked if she abandoned children in her care. Glenn Juenke (Night Security Guard): Testified that he ordered some girls to safety on his own initiative but conceded no general evacuation order was given to the camp, admitting, "We did everything we could do in the time that we had". Catie Eastland (Co-Director): Described the event as an "inland tsunami" and testified that she was aware of the high flood risk, noting that her husband (who died in the flood) had previously designated the "underside of the dining hall" as the highest known flood line. San Antonio Express-News Key Findings from Testimony and Investigations Lack of Training and Plans: Investigators reported that counselors had no emergency training or drills, and the camp lacked a written, certified evacuation plan, contrary to state regulations. Delayed Response: Staff reportedly prioritized moving canoes over evacuating campers, and many counselors were young and left on their own, according to testimony. No Alerts: Staff did not use loudspeakers or radios to notify all cabins to evacuate before water rose, despite warnings from national weather services. Inspection Failures: It was revealed that a state inspection conducted two days before the flood did not test the effectiveness of safety procedures. In what way? I think someone is not being honest about their overly emotional investment in this. Are they a lawyer? Family member? It comes across as dishonest and misleading. |
