Why do we have such low standards for ICE hiring and training?

There is low supply of ICE agents because Democrats are against enforcing immigration law, and have been demonizing the agency.

Or it’s because it’s become such an embarrassing job that they have to hide their faces in shame so that their families and friends don’t know what they do for money, so much so that they really have to scrape the bottom of the barrel.

Why do you assume the "supply" of ICE agents is "low"? According to Homeland Security, ICE has hired over 12,000 new officers and agents since 1/26, effectively doubling its workforce from 10,000 to approximately 22,000 in less than a year. This surge was fueled by more than 220,000 applications received during a massive nationwide recruitment campaign. There's obviously plenty of interest in these jobs if there are 220,000+ applications. The quality and training of those officers is another story.

PS. I'm sure there are enough MAGA and/or financially needy folks willing to do these jobs that potential stigma will not be a deterrent. After all, there are over 340 million people in this country.

The supply is lower than it would be because of Democrats' demonizing the agency and its mission.

Rightfully so, masked Gestapo members are not welcome in free countries. May their families continue to live in shame.

Largely good news although they appear to have eliminated the high school diploma requirement.

“DHS has denied that it reduced training levels for its deportation officers, regardless of when they were hired. But Democrats and whistleblowers have said that new deportation officers hired with funding from last year’s GOP megalaw went through a streamlined training program of roughly six to eight weeks, down from the 72-day basic training program recruits received before last summer.
The change is the latest example of the Trump administration recalibrating its hard-line approach to immigration enforcement in the wake of widespread political blowback and declining support for ICE — as well as President Donald Trump’s handling of immigration. Beyond practical adjustments like training, DHS has also softened its immigration message and made a slew of leadership changes at the agency in the wake of former DHS head Kristi Noem’s ouster.”

I work for a hospital that has an ER with a metal detector, but plenty of hospitals do not and are having to subdue patients not even knowing if they have a weapon. Also FWIW, medications like Haldol are not immediately effective, require coming at a combative patient with a sharp needle while someone holds them down, and may require multiple doses before the patient is subdued.

And yet, there accepted standards and culture healthcare. You do NOT curse at patients. Ever. Cussing out a patient could get you fired whether you are a doctor, nurses aide or hospital security. You don't punch them in the head. Choke holds are banned. Force and restraint are used if necessary, but under the concept of "nonmaleficence" to prevent harm. And yes, there are some horrific examples of violence toward healthcare workers which is worsening over time and speak to a need for increased screening and protection of staff. Our hospital security officers carry guns and we have had shooting scares - someone pulled a gun in the ER or the ICU, etc.

But when I see videos of ICE, it is just jarring. There are zero standards for professionalism, appears to be zero training on how to deescalate a situation. While most of our hospital ecurity are excellent, as a nurse manager, I once kicked a new hospital security officer off of my unit because they were so arrogant and confrontational, they made a bad situation worse. I think of that when I see ICE.

Shouldn't even Republicans want to have basic professionalism standards and adequate training for federal officers?

Ice agents have to have a college degree. A lot of nurses don't.
