Why do we have such low standards for ICE hiring and training?

Toxic masculinity.

The head of the dept of war was accused of rape, as was his current boss.

They are just looking for a Trump army. These thugs fit the bill—just like the Jan6ers.

Loyalty is the standard. Willingness to comply and blindly follow Der Leader.

DHS actually tried to promote low-ranking Border Patrol agents into leadership positions (Senior Executive Service) at ICE.

Apparently to a couple of those dummies just tried to invade a consulate.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Federal immigration officers tried to enter Ecuadorian consulate in Minneapolis but were stopped, foreign minister says.

I find this hilarious, apparently they yelled at the consulate guards and caused an international incident, upsetting Ecuador.

I work for a hospital that has an ER with a metal detector, but plenty of hospitals do not and are having to subdue patients not even knowing if they have a weapon. Also FWIW, medications like Haldol are not immediately effective, require coming at a combative patient with a sharp needle while someone holds them down, and may require multiple doses before the patient is subdued.

And yet, there accepted standards and culture healthcare. You do NOT curse at patients. Ever. Cussing out a patient could get you fired whether you are a doctor, nurses aide or hospital security. You don't punch them in the head. Choke holds are banned. Force and restraint are used if necessary, but under the concept of "nonmaleficence" to prevent harm. And yes, there are some horrific examples of violence toward healthcare workers which is worsening over time and speak to a need for increased screening and protection of staff. Our hospital security officers carry guns and we have had shooting scares - someone pulled a gun in the ER or the ICU, etc.

But when I see videos of ICE, it is just jarring. There are zero standards for professionalism, appears to be zero training on how to deescalate a situation. While most of our hospital ecurity are excellent, as a nurse manager, I once kicked a new hospital security officer off of my unit because they were so arrogant and confrontational, they made a bad situation worse. I think of that when I see ICE.

Shouldn't even Republicans want to have basic professionalism standards and adequate training for federal officers?

You are comparing apples to microwaves. While your underlying premise about professionalism is true, please don’t compare people that take the Hippocratic Oath to those that enforce the law.

You think a hospital security officer takes the Hippocratic Oath? The orderly moving patients from room to room?

Are you insane?

I think only the goon in the middle has had proper weapons training.

Apparently ICE has been recruiting some unsavory/criminal people since before the ICE surge of 2024.

At least two dozen U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement employees and contractors have been charged with crimes since 2020, and their documented wrongdoing includes patterns of physical and sexual abuse, corruption and other abuses of authority, a review by The Associated Press found.

While most of the cases happened before Congress voted last year to give ICE $75 billion to hire more agents and detain more people, experts say these kinds of crimes could accelerate given the sheer volume of new employees and their empowerment to use aggressive tactics to arrest and deport people.

The Trump administration has emboldened agents by arguing they have “absolute immunity” for their actions on duty and by weakening oversight. One judge recently suggested that ICE was developing a troubling culture of lawlessness, while experts have questioned whether job applicants are getting enough vetting and training.
