| A recently retired relative just signed up for a September African Safari where they will be flying between a couple countries. Tanzania and Rwanda I think? Do you think this is a good idea? They bought trip insurance. I’m a little worried but assume it’s fine as long as they don’t get eaten by a lion. |
I'd think it's fine. Africa has so far been out of all the madness, probably because he can't find it on a map. |
What kind of "issues" are you talking about? |
Tanzania is facing some civil unrest due to election issues. It's very sad - first time this has happened in decades there. I think it's still safe but I'd monitor it closely. |
At this point, the current reality is a lot worse than what I was predicting. I thought Trump Term 2 would be like Trump Term 1. Nope. Maybe international travel would be possible for Americans after a Greenland invasion, but I wouldn’t count on it being easy. |
One issue now is that Trump is both infuriating and energizing rightwing nuts in Europe, instead of pulling them on to Team America. I think another issue is that Trump is simply openly corrupt. I’m a liberal person who thought Dubya was wrong and protested against him, but I never thought he was intentionally corrupt. Trump is intentionally, flagrantly corrupt, and I think most centrist and center right Europeans are horrified by that. The political atmosphere itself might not actually be a big deal. But, if outrage with the U.S. hurts the 90-day visa waiver program or messes with our ability to use Visa cards, that could be really annoying. |
I think the political atmosphere could be a huge deal. I’ve been looking into travel for the summer to Scandinavia or the UK. But now I’m questioning whether Americans will be welcome. The political environment can change quickly. Despite all the flight sales going on I’m wondering if it makes sense to wait to see what happens. How is this even happening? |
| I mean what about domestic travel? I was hoping to take my kids to visit Chicago and see some friends this summer but I’m not sure it’s a great time to visit Chicago. |
Look at the state department travel advisory for Tanzania. It’s the same one isssued for Afghanistan. |
I'm doing a Scandinavian and England/Germany cruise this summer with my daughter as a graduation celebration trip. But I have low level anxiety. I loathe Trump and the weak lily-livered Rs, but will we be assumed as in the same basket as them? Should we wear a Canadian maple leaf shirt and keep our heads down? |
If we actually invade, we won’t be welcome anywhere. We will be regarded with suspicion in every country. |
I would. They are angry that Americans are protesting en masse against this. The slogan is “make Americans go away” (MAGA). That’s how it is now. If it gets worse, I doubt we can travel in Europe. It looks like uk may be splitting from eu in opinion, largely because nuclear assault is intertwined with us, which will make eu even angrier. Canada seems to be with eu fur now. |
With the ice problems, I’m not sure that’s a great idea either. Minnesota is just the beginning, trump says. They are actively recruiting and poaching police officers to have enough to occupy other cities - Chicago is on that list. |

I have a slightly complicated European trip I booked starting last August scheduled for June, and I am fretting a bit about being able to go.
I’m not interested in canceling it myself at all, but if events spiral, I wonder how travel insurance will even help. Need to check those exclusions; I seem to remember acts of war mean they ain’t paying out. |

I’ll be interested to see how American athletes are received at the Winter Olympics.
Will our national anthem get booed? |
