1530 SAT at McLean High not enough for UVA now?

This can be tough to succeed with. Student needs not only to be smart and studious, the student also needs to figure out all of the administrative steps for the Guaranteed Transfer and do each step in the correct order and on-time. Any administrative mistake in the process and the guarantee goes away.

+1 UVA consistently says that sustained performance in the classroom is the most important factor. And that no one strong factor can make up for another relatively weak one. So a kid with a 4.7 and no test scores likely has a better shot than a kid with a 4.2 and a great SAT.

My DC had 1530 and 4.7 gpa, good ec, still got rejected by UVA

Wow. That honestly shocks me.

Why is this shocking? UVA’s applicant pool is largely comprised of the top kids at every high school. High stats get you a serious look, they don’t get you in. Now, repeat 10x until you understand.

The UVA striving on this thread is insane. If your kid has a B on their transcript in a core subject, start looking at JMU. If your kid has all A’s but didn’t max out on AP, especially in foreign language, start looking at VT.

It is the 4.7 that is schooling. What school even goes this high??

It literally means nothing. UVA is very clear they couldn’t care less about GPA.

SAY what? I’m posting from UVa. Last fall’s class had a 4.5 GPA at the 75th percentile, a 4.4 at the median and a 4.2 at the lowest 25th percentile

The 4.7 is weighted with APs.......nearly every public school I know has GPAs like this. And you'd better believe every junior knows what their unweighted and weighted gpas are.

Yes, if DC doesn't meet the best practice in grades, rigor and SAT, getting into UVA becomes less certain and DC should start looking for alternatives. That said, there are examples quoted in this thread and elsewhere of DCs (including McLean HS DCs) that had some Bs in the core subjects, or didn't take a single foreign language for all 4 years, or other deviations that still got into (and attend) UVA. This reflects the holistic approach of UVA's AO and the fact that your DC is competing with the other DCs from their high school for their shot at UVA. A DC with a 4.7 and 1530 SAT that was rejected by UVA didn't lose out to a DC from Bristol (at least not directly) but lost out to a DC from their high school who might have a comparable GPA and SAT but offered something else, or frankly had a higher GPA and higher SAT.

There was a thread on UVA alternates but the typical UVA boosters got it locked.

Because a 4.7 is extremely high. UVA is not weird and inconsistent. My kids are at McLean and above a certain GPA the vast majority of kids are accepted.

1. UVA doesn’t care about GPA
2. You’re confusing causation and correlation
