1530 SAT at McLean High not enough for UVA now?

Anonymous
Last year 1520 was 75th percentile. If he doesn’t get in with 1530 it won’t be because of the test score.

Not Op , but its possible. If a kid has few Bs, gpa reflects that.

Look at Naviance--it's under the student's SIS login.

It looks like McLean got at least 13 kids in to UVA ED this cycle. Your Naviance will tell the story, but as others have noted my guess is there will be a clear line and most who got in will have higher than a 4.2 weighted GPA. No need to retake the SAT, just focus on getting all As this year. Junior year is a big year for GPA to go up. If he has a 4.2 now he should easily have a 4.35-4.4 by the time he applies.

My DD got in with a 1510 this year, 4.58 GPA but from a Loudoun HS.

Private school but in state. My DC has a 4.3 and a 35 ACT (not superscored). College counselor said probably won’t get into UVA because the GPA is just slightly too low. 12 APs including all the ones expected (world language, etc.), but a few semester B+s. Need a 4.4 from our school if applying EA. 4.3 can work 75% of the time if applying ED.

Why on Earth would a kid take Calc 2 and Calc 3 at NVCC? AP BC Calc junior year and Diff equations/linear algebra at McLean senior year. If this is a real post you are making this too hard.

Everyone is noting the GPA, but the kid is a junior so the GPA is after sophomore year. Presumably the GPA will go up this year with more APs, plus the GPAs in FCPS Naviance are after senior year (which tend to be even higher). That said I’m not disagreeing with the advice—UVA cares a lot about rigor and grades, with SATs being a lesser factor.

Yes but op says all ap de. And I’m assuming others would be honors. That means there are a good bit of b’s. Which is fine with me but not uva. That’s where my kid messed up. Too many ap not enough a.

Why the focus on UVA? He sounds like a great kid - he should go to one of countless universities that would be happy and proud to have him rather than focus on one that sets a ridiculous, arbitrary bar just because they can. IMO.

Let him take SAT again. No possible harm and might help. How is this a question?

"Just because they can" means they can because they're better and more desirable. Why wouldn't a high achieving kid want the best?

Are you one of the too many out of the DMV posters who knows nothing about UVA admissions? The SAT is fine. Better than fine. UVA cares more about the transcript and the classes taken than the SAT and this is an absolute fact.

A 4.2 after sophomore year will be a 4.4 after junior year, which is definitely ball park. OP needs to answer the question that others have repeatedly asked: what are the actual grades in the actual classes? How many Bs in the tough classes.

Also, I feel sorry for him and OP for being so stressed.

Needs a 4.4 minimum after junior year. And APs in al core classes.

UGA is getting tougher to get into.
