| Oh come on. Armstrong elementary feeder parents up in arms. Yes, it is true. A teacher here. Yes, the kids you would have never thought were heading to college had “help” on essays, no SAT scores, and multiple As and high GPA (all inflated). Yes, it’s true. But, you can keep thinking what you want to think. |
Huh? |
| I don’t understand PP comment but it is not true at all. I was at the award ceremony and about 20 kids had all A’s this year. In the past it’s been about 120. What other data do you need to see |
That was what I saw too. I don’t know what that supposed teacher saw or where that teacher teaches. I suppose they also did not see the graphs Dr. Noto shared about grades. Take a look at 10th grade science. And no — it’s not all Armstrong parents up in arms. In fact plenty of parents — who the principal is supposedly helping — have confided in me that they are also not happy with the new grading. They are tired of being used as an excuse for pushing certain agendas. |
| I’m sure I’ll be roasted for this but here goes: my daughter was one that got All A’s all three marking periods and we are so annoyed that the admin choice to get rid of the tradition to accommodate more. Instead of the special honor for All As which they have done in May for a long time, they made it all As and Bs so that more than tripled the award ceremony. Then to make matters worse instead of honoring the All As with an award they just had those kids stand up at their seats. How anti-climatic for those kids that strived for this goal. |
Is this 20 in whole school or in a particular grade that got all As? |
Whole school |
| That’s messed up PP I would be annoyed too. But it follows what FCPS does - the great equalizer. Brings up the low achieving students at the sake of the high achieving students. |
| HHS needs a new principal. |
Only 20 kids in WHOLE school got all As? And last year 120? Anyone know what stats are at Madison? |
| So really simplified, is what’s happening at Herndon that less kids are now getting As, Ds and Fs and FCPS making call it’s worth collateral hit on As to get less Ds ands Fs? Is there a way to roll out SBG where Ds and Fs go up but not such a 120 to 20 drop? |
I don’t have an all A student but I agree with you wholeheartedly! |
Easy: stop grade inflection at each level. Have final exams written by the next level course teachers. Hold back students who do not pass. Focus on extra support in classes where we see students START to straggle. |
Follow that for Ds and Fs but what helps for kids that were getting As that now aren’t? That’s not about them needing to have been held back? If no change to that then still a collateral hit to A kids. |
| It’s what parents at Herndon have been saying all year. We saw it with our own kids but until there was hard data we were ignored. Parents had to get really upset and aggressive and the PTA had to quit before they would even show us data. The data is here now showing exactly what we said it would and they act like they solved the problem by adding retakes. but what you naysayers don’t realize is it’s not as simple as the student saying “oh teacher I’d like to do a retake for this standard tomorrow”. The kids have to take time from APs and finals now in May and schedule afterschool retests on whole units since the tests aren’t standard by standard. My daughter is saying hell no and I don’t blame her one bit. I hate all the negativity here acting like the Herndon kids are getting inflated grades because it’s not true. The only kids getting inflated grades now are the ones who would have failed but are now maybe getting D’s. |
