If it were not for double standards, democrats would not have any standards whatsoever. |
Aww how insightful and clever. You get a sticker. |
So you misrepresent someone’s comments in order to rationalize treasonous Republicans. That tracks. |
You are aware that Democrats can love this country too, right? I’m an extremely liberal Democrat and I love this country and the people in it. |
I’m sure she did. But what ignorant people like you don’t understand is that it is virtually impossible for the overwhelming majority of human beings to immigrate here legally. That forces many people to enter illegally. All of this talk about “get in line and enter legally” is bullshit. There is no line to be had for most people. |
A lot of people on this thread seem to confuse being the most powerful country on earth with being the greatest country on earth. There really is a difference. |
It doesn’t “force” them to do anything. Citizens of other countries don’t have a right to be here. There is a reason why we limit immigration. And you’re calling me ignorant? |
This has been a journey for me. I grew up in an all white Irish Catholic neighborhood of Chicago with my dad being a 3rd generation cop (now one of my brothers is a 4th gen cop and the other is in the military). Being patriotic was drilled into us as kids. Stand for the pledge, remove your hat, sing along with the national anthem, respect the police, support our troops, thank god that you were born in the greatest country on earth. I went to private Catholic elementary school and an all girls private Catholic high school.
I went to Freshman year of college at a state school and LOVED being around different people, cultures, languages, perspectives, etc. So after that school year I decided to backpack the world (much to my parents dismay who have never left this great land). WOW did my life change. I'd be sitting at a table in a hostel with people from all over the world and feel embarrassed that they were communicating in so many different languages and I only knew English. I found myself shying away from announcing I was American (though it was obvious) and noticing how beautiful different cultures were- welcoming, kind, slower paced, less stressed, community oriented, government supported. I went back home for sophomore year and HATED it. Continued to backpack the world for all 4 summers of college. Now, I'm embarrassed of the neighborhood bubble I grew up in and my family's political views. I was devastated to have no paid maternity leaves. I'm hurt to be raising two daughters here in a place that gives someone like Donald Trump a platform to spew his racist, sexist nonsense. Dh and I have absolutely immersed in our girls in every opportunity we can, we did away with religion, have had them volunteering, traveling, serving all communities, and hopefully priming them to me conscientious, open minded, accepting members of the humanity since they were in diapers. We are seriously contemplating a move out of the country and have been getting our ducks in a row to make it happen. My answer now: 0% proud to be American. |
No one is “forced” to immigrate illegally? This is a mental regression so profound you must be an American. “I could not afford the shoes, your Honor, so I was forced to steal them, you see.” |
I used to be proud, but I think that was due to ignorance. The older I got, the more I learned, the more I traveled and listened to people's opinion of America all over the world, that sense of pride went away.
However, I don't think pride is a very useful or helpful thing in any context. Pride helps protect status quo, pride is defensive, pride of a nation is dependent on a fixed and immutable concept of a nation, pride makes you blind. I still absolutely love our country and for that reason I think it can do SO MUCH BETTER. I think we can learn from our mistakes, not just from long ago, but from the very recent past, and also the mistakes we continue to make. I am willing to roll up my sleeves and make things better. Not just for me, but for all. I wish we hadn't become so divisive. This was arguably, the result of a very deliberate strategy to divide us, to sow mistrust, to fracture the power of our nation. And capitalism run amok, giving way too much power which has allowed an ever growing divide between the rich and the many Americans who are still struggling to economically survive. In the end, I believe we all want the same things. We want relative safety for our families, to belong, and basic human rights. |
- and this is a double standard I am a conservative. I have spent most of my life voting Republican. It is because I am a conservative, that I can no longer vote for the Republicans. I actually do believe in the standards we held for years: Upholding the Constitution Strong national defense and support for the military Fiscally responsible Defending Democracy, both domestically and abroad Family values and holding elected officials to a higher standard The Republicans have abandoned all the standards on which we used to criticize the Democrats. To say that because the Democrats violate their own standards means we are entitled to violate our own is the height of hypocrisy. Are we really going to argue that we should be able to go as low as our opponents? While the Democrats may not have much room to criticize Republicans, Republicans are morally obligated to, not only to avoid the double standard, but because it’s the right thing for America. Do Republicans even remember why they became Republicans? Is the goal to serve America or to beat Democrats? The current Republican party has not only abandoned it’s conservative values, but is actively undermining the essence of America. As someone who does not hold a double standard, I will vote against Republicans until they either denounce Trump and the rest of his cultists or collapse and allow the formation of a conservative party that holds itself to the same standards it endorses. |
Very proud and grateful to be American. Maybe it is because I am an immigrant. I am living and thriving in this country and so my allegiance lies with America and hope that this nation thrives on its founding principals.
Proud Hindu Indian-American. We must have massive immigration reforms. We must have strict environmental laws. We must have parity in the workplace in remunerations. We must have education reforms in K-12. And we must train, expand our police force and have strict oversight over them. We also must have strict gun control laws. |
For context, my parents immigrated to the US shortly before I was born. |
Yes. You fail to recognize that the pure happenstance of your coming out of your mother’s vagina on American soil doesn’t make you any better than anyone else. There are many, many people who were born elsewhere who would contribute a hell of a lot more to the alleged “greatness” of this country than many of the ignorant and lazy slobs who had the dumb luck of being born here if they were just given a chance. |
Actually you also included car jackers - so you think someone who steals a car is worse than an insurrectionist trying to overthrow the capital. Nice. |
