And, many of us do it on one income, health issues, special needs kids, family issues and much more.. we've had it all thrown at us and yet, we still made saving for college a priority on much less than you. |
Well, I think the point of saving is to be able to afford something. College is something that families that prioritize and plan can afford. Just like families that prioritize and plan for other things get those other things. I am really not understanding the outrage or at least it is poorly focused in these rants. Luxury college (i.e., elite private and many flagship state universities) is expensive. Is it too expensive, probably, but there are people willing to pay. Is it a necessity? No it is not. Not even for high stats kids from families that, for whatever reason, were not able to save the cost of college. There kids will be fine going to college where their parents can afford to send them. Really. |
We are doing that as a luxury which is why we only have driven Hondas. |
I’m not following. My point was that we didn’t escalate our expenses starting with our first raises. We’ve had plenty thrown at us, including with one set of parent financial difficulties involving SN adult sibling. We’ve also been quite fortunate and have tried to be as generous as we can. |
+1000 This is so true! |
It's not your current income but what you've been doing for the last 18 years |
💯 Ours got into honors colleges with generous merit at several state schools. When we can do that fairly easily (even with 529 covering one year), why would we do anything differently? |
Mercedes pays taxes, as a for-profit. Private universities don't, as (supposed) non-profits. |
Yes, you do |
I read you posts. And, I am one of the many posters who thinks you can afford full freight if you want to. I don't know why you keep posting if you are satisfied. On your income, you should be able to afford it. It's also fine if you have other priorities. Just move on. |
Only if you saved absolutely nothing before college. Had you or PP set aside some portion of the extra 80thou, you'd be pretty well off for any extent of college costs. I am just shocked that you all look at this as a cash expense and not something you save up for. |
| My HHI is $180k and we save aggressively for college. If those of you with HHIs at $300k aren’t saving at least as much as I am, I just don’t even know what to say. I also have a child with autism and expensive therapies, and I have a disability. We live in a condo though because it’s all we can afford. |
Us too..no Fasfa but plenty of merit aid. |
After completely maxing out my retirement accounts and paying for my very expensive housing in a fantastic school district I just don’t have anything left over!!!!! Well I have 80k left over*, might as well be zero though. * More net cash than the average American gross household income |
Why would they save, they are rich! Also schools just make it work with Financial Aid if you are qualified to get in, that’s how we did it in 1994 and it must be the same now. |
