The city has been testing out novel progressive criminal justice policy, but all it’s done is made the city less safe. What solutions are you proposing? More burying of heads in the sand while car jackings and retail theft occurs unchecked? And don’t say “move to the suburbs!” Because I grew up in the city.

I agree with pp. There need to be serious consequences for those who commit crimes - even if they are teenagers. Actually, ESPECIALLY if they are teenagers.

Initially I thought that more compassion would be a good thing but unfortunately punishment does seem to be the answer. If the criminal isn't punished, they have the freedom & the mindset to commit more crimes due to no consequences.

The so-called progressive policies are treating criminals as stupid. These policies say that criminals & would be criminals are - unable to make the reasoned connection - between committing crime & no consequences.

It's deeply insulting to think that criminals are incapable of making basic connections.

For the rest of us who live in the real world, where we see stats, and can put 2 and 2 together, its not all some pandemic related problem of kids not having enough to occupy their time. it’s clear that years of electing progressive council members who push ever more lenient legislation for violent offenders (YRA and 2nd look act for example) and hiring progressive da’s that don’t prosecute (70% last year), and seeing that giving teens a slap on the wrist and pat on the head for basically terrorizing the city with violent crime are sort of the main contributors to the issue.

I think the problems are with the DC crime lab, police hiring, consistent police f-ups requiring cases to be dropped, and lax AG prosecution. We can also blame Kia’s USB problem and extended school closures for creating the kiddie karjacking trend. Charles Allen certainly did not help, but at the end of the day, his progressive bills are more annoying and useless than anything else. His (and the Council’s) big failure is to allow our crime-control apparatus to completely fall apart.

NP, I have no problem with more compassion towards those who haven't committed crimes yet. But once they do commit those crimes, no more compassion and they must face the consequences of their actions.

Politicians - do everything in your power to compassionately "save" at risk kids. That's fine. But once they commit the crime? The focus needs to switch away from compassion for them.

I live in NE DC and it’s pretty scary here these days. Armed carjacking with black handgun with an extended magazine this evening before dark. I’m not a delicate flower but like is said, it’s pretty scary.
