Northeastern - worst admissions procedures on the planet

BTW this is the OP. I have only posted once on this thread; unsure where your assumption is coming from. My kid will be attending another school on a scholarship. As with many other people on this thread, I find NEU admissions practices shady. Perhaps I overexaggerated on the title a bit but hope it is helpful for parents of kids just starting this process.

Totally agree. You are posting to help others understand this. IMO, their admission practices just demonstrate how they will treat you once you say "yes". If it's the school for you and this doesn't bother you, then go ahead and say yes, matriculate and enjoy. Otherwise, OP's comments may help someone else's kid from falling in love with a school that is not the right fit for them.

Northeastern is not a small LAC - if you need hand holding you may not be the type to want to go to school in the city, which is fine, just know what kind of school you are applying to.

Which brings up the question whether quality of coops is going to suffer with so many more students and slow down in tech, which was where they were placing many students.

Even if you want a mid size school in the city, just know they have grown from 12K undergrad to over 20K in a decade, without much infrastructure changes.

But with a tremendous business plan, that is serving both sides (accepted applicants and the school) better than any infrastructure change. So?

On top of that, some may say acquiring several properties, taking them over and completely restructuring them is exactly an infrastructure change. An impressive one, at that. So, you can't discount that.

You seem illogically offended OP, it is time to let it go - for your kid's sake. Don't give your kid the idea that they are not good enough for you, which is what you are doing here.

Where is your 20k undergrad students number coming from? I can't find that anywhere, including the CDS.

Also, slow down in tech? You (!!!) would have to tell the applicants not to go into tech, I suppose? Do you really think you can control everything, OP? Or nothing? Which one is it - because this hangup of yours is too much.

Wondering if OP has a student in tech, hence the post.

OP, most of the PPs can not imagine applying to a school without familiarizing yourself with the school. You over exaggerated much of your post. You really need to be more familiar with the schools to which your DC is applying. There will be other schools, your DC will find a school that fits them. But you and your DC need to be better prepared. Applications are a long and arduous process, and it is no secret that Northeastern, at any campus or major, has an incredibly low acceptance rate. It seems you want to somehow believe that is not true, but that does not change anything, nor does it help you, your DC, or your family.

OP again. Once again, you are making a lot of assumptions. While this is my first time dealing with college applications, my child and I researched the programs offered at NEU. We were familiar with the admission rate. Plus not to mention, no decision has been made on the application so there is nothing to be bitter about. Seeing how NEU handled the admission process crosses this school off the list for us regardless of the outcome.

Also, the previous post is only my 3rd one on this thread. The rest are not the OP.

OP, I agree with you. And that opinion applies to my family. I fully respect other people's opinions regarding their own families. I do find the "nothing to see here, move along" posters kind of hilarious. Northeastern's admissions practices are highly interesting to MANY people--Selingo covered them quite a bit in "Who Gets in and Why". Because NEU does things differently! And that's interesting! And people wanna talk about it! And for heaven's sake why would you be posting here if you didn't feel like talking about it??? It's ok to have differences of opinion, and it's also OK for rising applicants to see what it's like to go through the admissions process at a particular school. You wanna do a year in Oakland then Boston?? FANTASTIC. You don't? ALSO FANTASTIC. Sheesh.

You are correct- I thought it was fewer. However, I assume it's more like 12-15k on campus at any given time due to the coops?

I posted the slow down in tech comment and I m definitely not op. My kid did not apply to NE. I agree with prior poster that their admission practices are interesting, and in my opinion sleazy, as is their refusal to release data on an ever growing portion of their enrollment, students at NUin and Satellite campuses.

Welcome to college 2023.

You can thank the Class of 2020 for deferring, as it STILL has a ripple effect, and is a large part of what is happening at ALL colleges/universities, not just Northeastern.

If you were accepted to an "in demand" college - be thankful!

If I were to choose CS or Engineering, and I could not get into MIT (so few can, but so few discuss it - funny!) - then I would try for Northeastern.
