Absolutely. I don’t think I can remember the last time an incumbent Councilmember lost in a General Election. It is a little different in that she effectively lost to another incumbent. But she was the incumbent and she really played her hand badly. It’s wild how quickly the tides can turn.

Did she do any campaigning of her own or did she rely on her white progressive base to do it for her?

She made the mistake in believing that as a city-wide office holder that she did not need to represent the entire city. That mistake ended up costing her job.

The fact that she wants to blame “dark money” for her loss is telling. She would rather try to claim that it was external forces that caused her downfall, rather than it being mostly of her own actions and inactions.

Silverman lost because she's too far left for D.C. and because people don't like her personally.

I don’t think its her politics per se, considering that I82 had strongest vote share in W7 and W8. Instead, I think it is more about her behavior. I think this hits the nail on the head. She not only did not spend any serious time or effort reaching out EOTR, she seems to have actually actively antagonized folks who otherwise were willing to be her allies.

Unless your name is Mendo, it's become pretty clear that the (short) era of white candidates winning citywide elections is over, especially if they are extremely left wing. Just ask Ed Lazere (a well-funded two-time failure) and now Elissa Silverman, who got shellacked EOTR.

I know for a fact Charles Allen thinks he can be mayor one day (he was talked out of running this year). He has zero chance.

Erin Palmer seems to be gunning for a rematch in 4 years and she is going to lose, but not because of her race. She is going to lose because like Lazere before her, she lacks trust and as an outsider that will always plague her. At minimum you’ve gotta show up when you’re not asking for votes and even better if can actually help people before you turn around and ask them to help you. A lot of white politicians don’t seem to understand this, which is crazy. No one is going to vote for you if they think once you’ve got their vote you are going to disappear until the next election.

Silverman was in a unique position to actually build trust as an outsider, but she instead preferred to take the opposite approach. I am not sure what motivated her, but she certainly wasted a massive opportunity and proved to be the architect of her own downfall.

Why Silverman lost, in one tweet chain:

Hubris, arrogance and complete disregard for Black voters.

It’s crazy that she was so tone deaf as to be that rude to her own - and only - Ward 8 Black volunteer.

Erin might run for a ward council seat. She ran a respectable campaign against Mendelson, no small feat and she can be proud to have received over 40% of the votes. She could get on Council.

She’d have to run against Janeese, which is not going to happen. So it is either Council Prez or At-Large and she probably figures her best hope would be to knock off the old white guy as Council Prez because she’d have no chance of beating Henderson or Robert White. More power to her, but I think Mendelson will start looking even better these next four years without having to constantly deal with Silverman’s shenanigans.

Mendo will be 74 when his next term is up. I wouldn't be surprised if he hangs it up, and it's doubtful that a hugely left-leaning white person would be successful in a citywide race to succeed him.

Erin's best hope is to tack toward the center. Keep in mind that McDuffie garnered 2,000 more votes than Silverman in Ward 4 on Tuesday night (so far). Four years ago, she cleaned up in Ward 4. Voters are tiring of her ilk, and Tuesday was the first notice of that.

Or not found guilty at all, and this likely cost her the election. Dirty tricks by the Executive Branch.
